Dr. Gene Kritsky is a renowned cicada expert and professor emeritus of Biology at Mount St. Joseph University. With over 50 years of groundbreaking research to his name, he remains on of the foremost authorities in the field—and his passion for cicadas is stronger than ever.

His newest book, The Pilgrams’ Promise: The 2025 Emergence of Periodical Cicada Brood XIV, brings readers back to 1634 in Plymouth Colony, where settlers first described a “constant yelling noise… as ready to deaf the hearers.” Drawing on decades of research, Dr. Kritsky explores the fascinating life cycle of cicadas, their environmental impact, and the long history of Brood XIV. It’s the perfect starting point to learn about these mysterious creatures before they emerge in mid-May 2025.

As Brood XIV returns to Cincinnati this month, Dr. Kritsky will be out in the field—naming cicadas on your behalf when you support the Dr. Gene Kritsky Endowed Scholarship.
