MSJ Art & Design students blend master-inspired pumpkin art with heartfelt gratitude, honoring the university leaders who support their creative journeys.
Mount St. Joseph University’s 2D Design students recently combined art history, creativity, and gratitude through a unique pumpkin-painting project inspired by the great masters of art.
Using the traditional practice of apprentice learning, students studied the styles, techniques, and artistic approaches of famous artists and applied their knowledge by painting pumpkins inspired by these masters. Through pastiche, the practice of creating artwork that intentionally imitates or celebrates another artist’s style, students explored how artists learn from those who came before them while developing their own creative voices.
However, the project extended beyond artistic technique. Students also wrote personal thank you cards to members of the University administration, expressing appreciation for their continued support of the arts and the students pursuing creative careers.
"Throughout history, artists have relied on patrons who believed in their work and provided opportunities for artistic expression," explained Dr. Michaelann Kelley, Associate Professor of Art & Design and Chair of the Department of Creative Arts. "As artists, we need to be mindful of our patrons and recognize those who make our creative opportunities possible. Taking time to express gratitude is just as important as developing our artistic skills."
The project encouraged students to consider the historical relationship between artists and patrons, from Renaissance masters supported by wealthy families and institutions to contemporary artists supported by universities, organizations, and communities.
By combining art history, hands-on learning, and thoughtful expressions of appreciation, students discovered that being an artist involves more than creating artwork. It also means recognizing the people who invest in their education, advocate for the arts, and help make creative experiences possible.
