The Dent Schoolhouse in Cincinnati has a legendary history. Its history is rich with urban legends and unexplained disappearances.
It’s become an iconic location and a must-visit during October.
The Dent Schoolhouse opened in 1894 as the Dent Public School. The school reportedly taught kindergarten through twelfth grade. “The school was equipped with the finest teachers, cafeteria workers, and was seen as a model institution to send your children,” the website claims. The school was quite successful and even won multiple awards.
According to the urban legend, 1942 was the first year misfortunes began at the school. Several students went to school and never came home. Then, two more students, troublemakers, mysteriously disappeared. An investigation concluded that those who vanished were last seen at the Dent Public School.
In 1945, four students went missing. This is when the rumors began to spread that the disappearances were linked to the school somehow.
The school remained open despite the disappearances and the rumors. For seven years, things went quiet within the school. The rumors continued to circulate, but no more students went missing. That would change in 1952, when three more students went missing from the school. Soon after this, students began complaining of a foul odor coming from the basement. The head janitor, Charlie, claimed the smell was from the pipes clogging up. After this, the rumors took a different form. Students began to speculate that Charlie had something to do with the disappearances.
Another legend claims Charlie was a good man who was beloved by the children. This legend states that one night, Charlie was found dead after falling from the top floor. Some people think he was pushed. Yet another legend has him dying from a heart attack. Regardless, it’s said that Charlie’s spirit continues to walk the grounds of the Dent Schoolhouse.
Then, in October 1955, at least seven more students vanished without a trace. Not long after this, students once again began complaining of a smell so strong and toxic that it caused some children to pass out. Community members, leaders, and citizens of Dent broke into the school to investigate what they found was horrifying.
Inside the basement, the group found the missing students. All of them. They were deceased. The Dent schoolhouse website describes the scene: “Bodies had been sealed in barrels, wedged behind the brick walls of the basement, and left in sanitary tubs to decay forever.” The janitor was nowhere to be found. A long search for him turned up nothing. The urban legend lists this as the reason the school closed down soon after this, but in reality, it shut down because of overcrowding issues.
The Dent Schoolhouse is a great time, perfect for the creepy Halloween season, and the lore and urban legends just add to its reputation. I urge everyone to attend sometime during the fall season.
It is located not far from the Mount, on Harrison Ave. in Green Township.
