Biography:
Born in the Republic of Korea, Dr. Minhwa Kim earned her Master’s and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in violin performance from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM), where she studied under Dr. Piotr Milewski and Professor Kurt Sassmannshaus. A recipient of the prestigious Starling Scholarship at CCM, she also won both the scholarship and concerto competitions at Ewha Womans University in Seoul. Her early achievements include First Prize at the Junior Hanguk Music Competition in Chonbuk and Second Prize at the Weurm Competition in Seoul.
Dr. Kim is a highly accomplished violinist, chamber musician, and educator. She has performed as a soloist in Vivaldi’s Concerto for Three Violins with the Ewha Orchestra and Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole with the Korean Symphony Orchestra. She has also given recitals at Sejong Center for the Performing Arts and many other venues. As a chamber musician, she founded the Ammigus String Quartet, showcasing her passion for collaborative performance. She also played as a section violinist in the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra, and Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra.
Dr. Kim’s success as an educator is reflected in the accomplishments of her students. She is on faculty at Mount Saint Joseph University, where she teaches violin and viola to both undergraduate and graduate students and instructs String Method and Skills as part of the Music Lab course for undergraduates. Her students have won major scholarships, excelled in concerto competitions, and secured professional roles as orchestra directors at middle and high schools, as well as positions as private instructors. She has also developed a string festival program for students from kindergarten through high school, further demonstrating her dedication to nurturing young musicians.
Through her commitment to both performance and teaching, Dr. Kim continues to inspire the next generation of musicians while maintaining a strong presence in the professional music world.
