    Canvas Transition

    1. Home
Our institution is transitioning from Blackboard Learn to Canvas as our primary learning management system. This change is part of our commitment to improving the teaching and learning experience by providing a more modern, user-friendly platform with enhanced tools for course design, communication, and student engagement. This page will serve as a central hub for important updates, key dates, resources, and support information to help faculty, staff, and students navigate the transition smoothly.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why are we transitioning to Canvas?
Because Blackboard Learn is being sunsetted, our institution conducted a comprehensive evaluation process to identify the next learning management system, and Canvas was selected as the platform that best meets our needs for teaching, learning, and student experience.
Where do I go to login?

You can log in now by going to https://msju.instructure.com/

Please use your MSJ username and password.

Do you have resources or guides for getting started in Canvas?

Of course! We will be hosting MSJ specific training sessions, but Canvas also offers a variety of in depth user guides.  Here are some guides to help get you started!

When will Canvas be going live?
Canvas will go live during the summer of 2026 (S426).
I am teaching a fully online class - do I need to rebuild my course from scratch?
No the Blackboard team will handle the transformation of all fully online courses.
What are the differences between assignments in Canvas versus Blackboard?

Because Canvas is a different learning management system, some tools and activities may function differently than they did in Blackboard Learn. As a result, certain assignments may need to be structured slightly differently—for example, blogs in Blackboard may need to be recreated as self-discussions in Canvas. The crosswalk below highlights common equivalents to help guide this transition.

      Will there be training opportunities?
Yes! More information to come soon on training sessions!
Do I need to export my courses out of Blackboard?
We will be bulk migrating courses out of Blackboard and into Canvas - that being said you are welcome to export your courses if you wish to have backups.
When will I lose access to Blackboard?
Our contract with Blackboard ends July 31st, 2026. We will no longer be able to access the system after that date.
Will previous student data be brought over into Canvas?

When we bulk migrate courses from Blackboard to Canvas, student data cannot be transferred. This includes submitted assignments, tests, grades, and any other student activity or records.

The migration process only brings over course content, such as files, assignment shells, quizzes (without student attempts), discussion prompts, and other instructional materials. Any student submissions or grade data will remain in Blackboard and will not appear in Canvas.

If you would like to retain copies of student work for your records, you may want to download or export those materials from Blackboard before access changes.

How will Canvas requests be managed?

We will be creating a new email address Canvas@msj.edu and we will also be rolling out a new ticketing system to handle Canvas request. More information to come! :)
