Industry Data

Healthcare practitioners and related support occupations are among the fastest growing careers projected for 2026, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (2017). Together these will contribute about one fifth of all new jobs, and thus we will see an increase in demand for qualified practitioners. This enormous growth is likely due to the aging population (who also stay active in later life), an increased focus on preventative care, growing rates of chronic conditions (e.g. diabetes, obesity), and the current research on the longevity of sports-related injuries (U.S. Department of Labor, 2017).

The United States has seen a shortage of nurses for several years now, and with over 200,000 positions opening by 2026 (BLS, 2018), the need for qualified nurses will only increase. In Ohio alone, the projected percent increase of jobs is 14%. The field includes a wide variety of specialties that could capitalize on your past experience, as well. We are also seeing more and more nontraditional nursing positions in schools, universities, state and federal government agencies, parks, research, and more.

Physician Assistant (PA) is one of the fastest growing occupations in the country. O*NET (n.d.) projects that the PA field will expand much faster than average, with 37% national growth rate expected over the next 10 years, and 31% in Ohio. Demand is so high that over 75% of PA grads are offered multiple jobs on graduation (AAPA, 2018). PAs work in primary care, internal medicine, emergency medicine, pediatrics, surgery, and more healthcare fields.

Physical Therapists (PTs) are also in high demand right now, as are Athletic Trainers (ATs). Both are projected to grow much faster than average due to the high activity level of the aging population of the world, higher rates of obesity, and our increased focus on sports-related injuries (O*NET, n.d.). Positions are opening in secondary schools, universities, youth leagues, Olympic sports, performing arts centers, and professional sports, as well in traditional healthcare facilities. PTs also have the opportunity to open their own practices and operate with more independence.
