Meet Mount graduate, Matthew Schimittou’ 12
After Air Intelligence Officer Matthew Schmittou ‘12, graduated from high school in 2004, he spent four years in the Marine Corps where he served two tours in Iraq and was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for acts of valor during combat. In 2008 he made the decision to pursue his degree at Mount St. Joseph University. He brought to campus 15 months of combat experience as an infantry assaultman in Iraq, and a unique perspective and worldview that proved to be invaluable to his chosen history major and also to his fellow peers. “A huge part of world history deals with military history that has shaped the planet over the centuries,” says Schmittou. “I was certainly glad my experience as a Marine in Iraq was able to benefit my peers’ education by giving them a firsthand perspective of certain aspects of history that I have lived.”
During his time at the Mount, Schmittou volunteered on three mission trips in two years to southern Belize through his church. He also took part in honor societies, peer tutoring programs and supported fellow veterans through Veterans in Communities (VIC), an outreach organization for local veterans on the Mount’s campus. “One of the things I appreciate most about the Mount is its service learning mission,” he said. “It’s one of the things that drew me to the University. I believe service is an important part of life, and I am glad that this University believes that as well.”
Schmittou graduated summa cum laude from the Mount with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. He was awarded the 2012 Nontraditional Distinguished Student award and spoke at his commencement ceremony. “With a smaller atmosphere and hometown feel, you’re not a number at the Mount. That’s very appealing to someone coming out of the military, who was a number and a statistic for years,” he said.
