The College of Mount St. Joseph’s criminology club is bringing Debbie Gardner, an internationally-known self-defense instructor, to the campus on Friday, Nov. 16 from 7-9 p.m. for a self-defense demonstration in the College Theatre. The seminar called, “Mind in the Matter,” will teach the public how to protect themselves with something as common as a water bottle or even a cell phone. The community is welcome to attend the free seminar.

Lauren Heugel, Mount student and criminology club president, invited Gardner to the campus to teach the basic principles of self-defense. “We wanted students and other people in the community to benefit from learning easy ways to protect themselves,” she said. “With the upcoming holiday shopping season, crime is often on the rise and we hope the demonstration will equip people with the knowledge so they don’t become targets of crime.”

Gardner and her husband, Mike, are former law enforcement officers who founded Survive Institute which is designed to teach people simple crime survival tips. They have given demonstrations to many large corporations and universities across the world, and have appeared in the media all over the United States and Australia.

The College of Mount St. Joseph is an undergraduate and graduate Catholic college that provides an interdisciplinary liberal arts and professional curriculum emphasizing values, service and social responsibility.
