Mount St. Joseph University will be celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy in January of 2019 with three events: the MLK Kickoff Movie Night, the MLK Day of Service, and the MLK Leadership Luncheon.

The overarching theme for the celebration will be “Our Beloved Community." Dr. King envisioned a beloved community without poverty, hunger, and homelessness--a community where racism and discrimination would be replaced with inclusivity.

According to the Mount's Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, Leah Reynolds, Ph.D., “Theming our MLK events ‘Our Beloved Community,’ appropriately illustrates the direction the Mount is headed, specifically as it relates to inclusion excellence. Dr. King’s profound vision of a beloved community recognized that in all of our differences, ‘we all can share in the wealth of the earth.’ As we celebrate and honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for the pivotal influence he had on our country, it is my hope that we can all reflect on how we can contribute to living out Dr. King’s vision of establishing a beloved community at the Mount.”

The Mount’s MLK celebrations begin on Friday, January 18, 2019, with an MLK Kickoff Movie Night featuring the film The Hate U Give in the Harrington Food Court from 4:30 p.m.--6:30 p.m. Following the movie there will be a reflection on The Hate U Give and how it relates to Dr. King’s vision for our beloved community.

On Monday, January 21, Mount students, staff, faculty, and alumni will participate in the MLK Day of Service through two events: (1) a Habitat for Humanity Shed Build and (2) Cincinnati’s Annual Commemorative MLK Day March in downtown Cincinnati.

The Habitat for Humanity Shed Build will take place at the Habitat Training Annex from 9 a.m.--12 p.m. and the MLK Day March will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Freedom Center. Transportation and lunch will be provided for these events.

On Wednesday, January 23, Black Student Union will host their annual MLK Leadership Luncheon from 12 p.m.--1:30 p.m., featuring Sergeant Chantia Miller of the Cincinnati Police Department as the guest speaker.
