Mount St. Joseph University Announces 103rd Commencement

CINCINNATI, Ohio (May 6, 2019)--Nearly 400 students will receive their diplomas at Mount St. Joseph University’s Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 11, 2019, in the Jean Patrice Harrington, SC, Student Center. Commencement for graduate and doctoral students will be held at 10 a.m. and Commencement for baccalaureate students will be at 2:30 p.m.

The morning ceremony will feature a keynote address from Peter Strange. Peter Strange is the Chairman Emeritus of Messer Inc., the parent company for Messer Financial Services and Messer Construction Co., a regional general contactor that performed about $1.1 billion worth of construction in 2018. Strange’s leadership in the construction business and in the community has strengthened this region. He has served on the boards for more than 30 community organizations.

Strange has also served the Mount as a leader when he joined the Vision 2000 Campaign Committee in early 1990s. He was appointed to the Mount’s Board of Trustees in 1999 and served two terms including his position as Board Chairperson from 2005-2007. He received an honorary degree from the Mount in 2010.

Ertharin Cousin will be the keynote speaker for the afternoon ceremony, during which she will be presented with the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. For more than 30 years, Ertharin Cousin has shared her experience and corporate leadership skills to serve as a global advocate for lasting solutions to food insecurity and hunger. 

From 2012 to 2017, Ms. Cousin was executive director of the United Nations World Food Programme, the largest humanitarian organization in the world. She oversaw operations for 14,000 staff serving 80 million beneficiaries in 75 countries. In 2009, Cousin was nominated by then President Obama and confirmed by the Senate as the U.S. Ambassador to the UN (United Nations) Agencies for Food and Agriculture in Rome.

A native of Chicago, Cousin has been listed numerous times on the Forbes 100 Most Powerful Women List, on Time’s 100 Most Influential People List, and as one of the 500 Most Powerful People on the Planet by Foreign Policy Magazine.

Special parking arrangements have been made for Commencement events. Members of the Department of Public Safety and Division of Institutional Advancement request that everyone honor the following arrangements:

  • Parking behind the Jean Patrice Harrington, SC, Student Center is reserved for honorees, special guests, board members, and guests with disabilities.
  • Others may park in the West Parking Lot. The first driveway to the West Parking Lot will be closed, so guests may access the lot from the second entrance, off Delhi Road near the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse.
  • Parking will also be available in the Parking Garage at the corner of Delhi and Neeb Roads.
