College is about building relationships and valuable experiences with faculty, staff, students and professionals in a field of study. Although, academics is the primary focus of the college experience, networking through active involvement with others is also important. Research shows that extracurricular activities are the second best predictor of managerial characteristics for graduates after their college major, and that such activities are relative to administrative and interpersonal abilities as well as motivation to work and advance.
The office is located in the Student Development and Wellness Center of the Harrington Student Center. The Office promotes a wide variety of services and programs in several areas such as student government, clubs and organizations, community outreach, new student orientation, and leadership opportunities on and off campus. All students are encouraged to participate in membership and leadership opportunities within co-curricular activities for the purpose of complementing their educational programs and furthering their intellectual, spiritual, social, personal identity and physical development.
The Office is instrumental in providing comprehensive programs and training in all aspects of leadership development. Every year the Office sponsors a series of club and fiscal training workshops. All student clubs and organizations are provided with a President’s Manual; and an Advisor Manual to guide them through College policies, club registration, running effective meetings, motivating members, and problem solving. In addition, the office sponsors Campus Fair at the beginning of each semester to allow the student clubs and organizations a chance to highlight their services and recruit new members.
In an effort to provide students with a basic understanding of leadership, to assist them in developing a personal philosophy of leadership, and to build awareness of the moral and ethical responsibilities of leadership, the Office of Student Development offers a course in Leadership Development (CED 200). The course is only offered in the fall semester for one credit hour. To register, contact your academic advisor or the Director of Student Development at 244-4949.
