To process your Federal Stafford and PLUS loans more efficiently, the College of Mount St. Joseph will electronically process your loan application. The process begins with you accepting the Stafford Loan(s) listed on your award letter or adjusting it to the amount you would like to borrow and returning the award letter to our office. On the back of the award letter we ask that you choose a lender. We offer some suggestions, but you have the right to choose any lender.
Why is this choice important? The basic terms of the Stafford Loan are the same regardless of the lender you choose. However, lenders offer "borrower benefit programs" which reduce your costs over the life of the loan. For instance, some programs offer borrowers a lower interest rate after making a specified number of on-time monthly payments and an additional reduction for automatic payment withdrawals. Others reduce or eliminate origination fees.
We encourage you to make an informed choice by investigating the current borrower benefits being offered by the lenders listed below:
For even more borrowing options, see the Stafford information on www.finaid.org/loans. Once you are on this site, select the link to student loan discounts. At the bottom of that page, you will see a link for "Stafford Loan Discounts," which will bring up the lender list. They do a great job of explaining the benefits (and pointing out some of the caveats) for a large group of national lenders.
Bottom line, you have the freedom to choose whichever lender you like based on the terms and conditions that are most appealing to you. We'll work with you to process your loan as efficiently as possible once you have made that choice.
Before you can receive your loan funds, federal law requires that all first-time borrowers participate in an entrance interview. In this interview, you will receive information, which relates to your loan, including your rights and responsibilities as a borrower. You can complete your entrance interview electronically by selecting Entry Counseling here and following the instructions. Please contact Student Administrative Services at (513) 244-4418 with any questions or if you would like to schedule an individual interview.
