6/25/09 Lions’ volleyball team gets two more commitments
The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that Newport Central Catholic senior Michelle Woods and Northeastern (Springfield, OH) High School senior Erica Williams will attend the Mount and play volleyball this fall for the Lions.
Woods, a 5-foot-2 setter, won her team’s best defense award in 2008-2009. She also played softball while in high school and made the 36th District All-Tournament team this past spring. In addition, Woods was in the Students for Life Pep Club, and on her school’s Honor Roll in the Anthony Munoz Leadership Conference. Michelle, the daughter of Donna and Mike Woods, is planning on majoring in Athletic Training at the Mount.
Williams, a 5-foot-11 right-side hitter, was a team captain her junior year and helped her team to a Division III District runner-up finish her senior season. She also was a four-year academic award winner and four-year Spanish Club member. In addition, she ran two years of varsity track and during her senior year was in Relay for Life and a choir member. Williams has played Junior Olympic volleyball for three years. Erica, the daughter of Pamela and Ronald Williams, is undecided on her college major.
6/7/09 Deer Park High School senior Michelle Webb to attend the Mount and play volleyball this fall
The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that Deer Park High School senior Michelle Webb will attend the College in the fall and play volleyball for the Lions.
Webb was named Second Team All-CHL last season, and was chosen for the Coach’s Senior Volleyball showcase after recording 154 kills, 84 digs and 58 aces during her senior season. In 2007 she won the Deer Park High School Wildcat award and won an All-CHL Academic award for the 2007-2008 school season. Additionally, Webb has been active in many school activities and clubs during her high school career, and has received various academic honors. She played Junior Olympic Volleyball from 2005-2008. Her high school coach was Cristy Lawson.
Michelle, the daughter of June and Dan Webb, is planning on majoring in Psychology, and gaining a doctorate in Physical Therapy at the Mount.
4/30/09 Oak Hills High School’s Jacklyn Stenger and Little Miami High School’s Jennifer Szekely to attend the Mount and play volleyball for the Lions
The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that Oak Hills High School’s Jacklyn Stenger and Little Miami High School’s Jennifer Szekely have committed to attend the College of Mount St. Joseph in the fall and play volleyball for the Lions.
Stenger, a libero, has played club volleyball for eight years. She was a high school team captain for two seasons, a 2008-09 All-City Third team selection, First Team All-Conference honoree and most outstanding team player recipient. In 2006-07 she was her team’s top defensive player and in the 2007-08 team dig leader. In three high school seasons she recorded 79 service aces and 912 digs. Stenger played high school volleyball for Jim DeLong. Jacklyn, the daughter of Pamela and James Stenger, is undecided on her college major.
Szekely, a defensive specialist/outside hitter, was a two-time First Team All-Conference member. In 2008, she was her team’s Offensive MVP, and a District 15 Honorable Mention honoree. The four-year varsity starter had 212 kills, 178 digs, and 47 service aces during her senior campaign, and her junior season she had 180 kills, 156 digs and 43 service aces during her junior season. In addition, Szekely was involved with many extra-curricular groups and functions including Student Government, and won Student of the Year honors in Algebra and Radio. Szekely played high school volleyball for Mason Boulton. Jennifer, the daughter of Susan and Jeff Szekely, plans to major in Chemistry at the Mount.
3/4/09 Colerain High School senior Taylor Figgins to attend the Mount and play volleyball for the Lions
The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that Colerain High School senior Taylor Figgins has committed to attend the Mount and play volleyball for the Lions in the fall of 2009
Higgins, a 5-foot-10 outside/middle hitter, was an All-Academic Greater Miami Conference honoree for four years. Figgins was eighth in the GMC in kills and digs last season, and finished her career third in kills, eighth in digs and 11th in blocks all-time at Colerain. She was the Colerain High School Power Player of the Year in 2007 and the team's Offensive MVP in 2008. In addition, she was an executive board member on her school's student senate. Her high school coach was Jenny Meyer.
Taylor is the daughter of Janice and Jim Figgins and is planning on majoring in Nursing.
2/24/09 Mount announces hiring of Jon Bennett to coach the Lions' volleyball programs
The College of Mount St. Joseph announces the hiring of Jon Bennett as head coach of men’s volleyball. Bennett, who was the Lions’ women’s assistant volleyball coach (2001-2004), will lead the program into its first year of action during the 2009-2010 academic year. He will also be the head coach of the women’s volleyball team this fall.
