11/14/08 Lions season ends with a hard-fought 1-0 double overtime loss to fourth-ranked Calvin College in the NCAA Division III Tournament
Calvin College's Natalie Veurink scored the game-winning goal in the 102 minute of action on a great finishing play today ending the Lions' 2008 season by a 1-0 score in the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Mount completes the year with a 14-5-2 mark while Calvin, ranked fourth in the nation's latest poll, is 18-2-1 and moves on to a second round home game. It was only the second overtime game of the season that Calvin played, as they had out-scored their opponents by a 59-10 goal margin heading into the game against the Mount.
The Mount played well throughout the game, and narrowly missed in the second half and overtime periods of putting the game-winning goal in the net against the Knights. Calvin out-shot the Lions, 13-5 but only 7-4 in shots on goal. The 14 wins this season by the Lions is a new single-season team record.

The College of Mount St. Joseph’s Kelly Bare (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain) has been named the 2008 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer Most Valuable Player. The senior goalkeeper helped guide the Lions to the school’s fourth HCAC championship and earn a bid into the NCAA Division III women’s soccer tournament.
Bare was a force in the net for the Lions this season, allowing only nine goals in 20 games for MSJ. The senior led the HCAC and ranked among the national leaders in goals against average (0.44) and save percentage (.880) this fall, anchoring the Mount’s defense. In over 1,800 minutes in net this season, Bare has totaled 66 saves and a 14-4-2 record.
The Lions standout broke a Mount school record with 14 total shutouts this season and also holds MSJ career goaltending records with 39 games played and 23 shutouts. Bare ranks third all-time on the Mount saves list with 144 saves in her career.
Mount Head Coach Carrie Taylor has been named the 2008 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Taylor led the Lions to a 14-4-2 overall record and an 8-0 record in conference play, claiming their fourth HCAC regular season title. The Lions earned the conference tournament championship and a berth into the NCAA Division III tournament. Taylor will guide the Mount into NCAA tournament action this weekend against No. 4 Calvin on Nov. 14 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Joining Bare on the All-HCAC team are teammates Beth Schuermann (Cincinnati, OH/Home schooled), Allie Pirman (Amelia, OH/Amelia), Laurie Neumann (Cincinnati, OH/Seton), and Shannon Nortman (Cincinnati, OH/Mercy). Second team All-Conference honorees were Nikki Jones (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain), Laura Mund (South Dearborn, IN/South Dearborn), and Jessica Jester (Hamilton, OH/Ross).
Schuermann’s all-conference award was her fourth in her career while Neumann has claimed three all-conference honors. Mund, Pirman and Bare won their second all-conference awards while Taylor claimed her second HCAC Coach of the Year honor. Jones and Jester each won their first All-HCAC awards.
