Melanee Atkinson returns for her second season as the Lions’ head coach.
Atkinson was most recently at Episcopal High School in Jacksonville, Florida, where she was head girl’s basketball coach (2003-2005). While at Episcopal High, Atkinson led her team to a district runner-up and regional quarterfinal finish in 2004 and a district semifinal appearance in 2005. She was also that school’s communications coordinator (2003-2005), helping to design and produce publications that included a bi-yearly magazine and event invitations as well as marketing and fundraising brochures. Atkinson was also a public speaking teacher (2004-2005) and a physical education coordinator for The Chappell School (2002-2003) in Jacksonville, Florida.
Atkinson’s coaching experience in the college ranks includes second assistant coach at Division I American University in Washington, D.C. (1993-1996), first assistant coach at American University (1996-1997) and associate head coach at American University (1997-1998). She helped American University to a school-record 22-5 mark and its first ever post-season tournament in 1998, national recognition by both the AP and the Coaches Poll, and an upset over #7 nationally-ranked University of Virginia. Following her time at American University, Atkinson was the first assistant coach at Division I Jacksonville University (1998-2002), helping lead the new program to bring in 13, first-year student-athletes, 14 academic all-conference performers and two all-conference players.
While in high school Atkinson was Gatorade’s Maryland High School Player of the Year (1988) and made Street and Smith Basketball Magazine High School All-America (fifth team, 1988). Atkinson gained a basketball scholarship to Division I University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia where she was a member of the team for four seasons. During her college career she was a four-year letter winner, tri-captain (1991-1992), most improved player (1991), team leadership award winner (1992), and played on three straight final four teams. She graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts in Rhetoric and Communications degree in 1992. Atkinson played professionally for CB Jesuitinas, in Segovia, Spain in 1992 and was inducted into the Carroll County Hall of Fame (Maryland) in 2001.
Atkinson, her husband, Kevin, and children McKenzee and Zoee, reside in Montgomery, Ohio.
