11/04/07 Lions season ends with a 3-1 loss against Hanover in the HCAC Tournament Championship
The Mount's nine-year hold on winning the HCAC Tournament and advancing to the NCAA Regional was broken today at Hanover College, as the host Panthers defeated the Lions, three games to one. The Mount finishes 2007 play with a 20-17 record while Hanover (23-10) moves on to the Great Lakes Regional Tournament. The Lions had won the HCAC Tournament Championship every year since becoming a member of the conference (1998).
In today's action, the Mount was looking to avenge an earlier three-game loss to the Panthers this season and jumped out to leads of 3-1 and 5-2 in game one. The lead see-sawed back and forth throughout until the Lions took a 15-14 lead, after a kill by Brandi Corbello (Florence, KY/Boone County) and pulled away by a 28-22 margin after a Corbello ace. Hanover called timeout at that point and regrouped, going on an 8-0 run to win the first game, 30-28.
Hanover got off to a 16-7 advantage in game one, capitalizing on a strong hitting attack, and led by an 11-point margin, at 28-17, before claiming game two, 30-22.
The Lions, looking to stave off a three-game championship sweep, played close through the early going of game three, and afer a Becky Breetz (Southlake, TX/Carroll) kill made the score 13-11, pulled away at 19-15 and led 25-17 after an ace by Anna Richter (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin). Caitlin Sargent (Covington, OH/Covington) ripped an attack kill through the Panthers' defense as the Lions won game three, 30-21.
The Mount jumped out 3-1 in game four, only to eventually fall behind by a 10-9 margin and trailed by deficits of 19-14 and 27-21 before fighting back. Breetz' kill made the score 28-27 Hanover but the Lions' could not hold off the Panthers, as the host team recorded the final two points of game four, on a kill and an ace, to win 30-27 and take the match.
Breetz finished with 17 kills while Richter had 13 kills and Sargent added ten kills. Katie Playko (Norwalk, OH/Norwalk) had 49 assists , 14 digs and two aces while Richter chipped in three aces and 17 digs. Jamie Cooper (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) led the Lions with 27 digs.
11/03/07 Mount posts 3-0 win over Manchester in the HCAC Tournament Semifinals; advances to the HCAC Tournament Championship
Mount senior right-side hitter Becky Breetz (Southlake, TX/Carroll) continued her solid all-around play tonight, recording 20 kills, seven digs and two blocks, as the Lions defeated Manchester, 30-18, 30-21, 30-27 in the HCAC Tournament Semifinals at Hanover College. The Mount, 20-16 overall, advances to the Nov. 4 HCAC Tournament Championship against the host Hanover College Panthers. Match time is 1:00 p.m.
The Lions, the second seed in the conference tournament, dropped their match against the top-seeded Panthers this season in three games. The winner of the HCAC Tournament Championship match receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Tournament. The Mount has won the HCAC Tournament all nine seasons they have been in the HCAC, and have represented the HCAC each time in the post-season regional.
Katie Playko (Norwalk, OH/Norwalk St. Paul) chipped in 41 assists in the match aganst the Spartans while teammates Jamie Cooper (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) and Anna Richter (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) combined for 37 digs. Senior Jessica Beck ( Columbus, OH/Bishop Watterson) had a team-high six blocks. Lions win at Bluffton University and finish in a tie for first place in the HCAC
Becky Breetz (Southlake, TX/Carroll) had 19 kills and teammates Anna Richter (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) and Caitlin Sargent (Covington, OH/Covington) added 13 and 11 kills respectively, as the Mount won by a three games to one score tonight at Bluffton. The Mount is now 19-16 overall, and finished the regular season tied for first place in the HCAC with Hanover, with each holding 7-1 marks.
Hanover, however, will host the HCAC Tournament this coming weekend as the regular season champions, as they claimed the tie-breaker with their win over the Mount this season. The Lions, the number two seed, will take on the Defiance/Manchester winner in the Semifinals on Nov. 3 at 7:00 p.m. The Tournament Championship will take place at Hanover College on Nov. 4 at 1:00 p.m.
10/29/07 Mount senior Becky Breetz wins HCAC Player of the Week honor
College of Mount St. Joseph’s Becky Breetz (Southlake, TX/Carroll), who averaged 13.25 kills and 2.0 blocks per match for the Lions last week, has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week. The senior right-side hitter totaled 53 kills, eight blocks, and a .388 hitting percentage last week as the Mount finished the week 2-2.
The Mount defeated HCAC foes Anderson and Defiance and lost to Millikin and DePauw during the week. Breetz had 22 kills and hit .487 in the Lions’ 3-1 win over Anderson. She leads the Lions in kills and hitting percentage this season and sits second in blocks. Mount St. Joseph is 18-16 overall and is tied for first in the HCAC standings at 6-1 with Hanover.
10/27/07 Lions go to 18-16 on the season after dropping back-to-back matches at DePauw University
The College of Mount St. Joseph played two matched today at DePauw University, losing each in three games to Millikin University and DePauw. The Lions are now 18-16 overall this season and will end 2007 regular season play on Oct. 30 at HCAC-rival Bluffton.
The Mount is currrently tied for first place in the conference with Hanover, both holding 6-1 records.
10/26/07 Mount continues to hold first place tie in the conference after a 3-0 victory over Defiance College
Anna Richter (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) had 14 kills and digs and teammate Becky Breetz (Southlake, TX/Carroll) added nine kills and three blocks helping the Lions to a 3-0 win at home tonight against Defiance. The Mount remains tied for first place in the HCAC with Hanover, both sporting 6-1 marks. The two teams wil end HCAC play on Oct. 30 when Hanover plays Franklin and the Mount travels to Bluffton.
The Lions, 18-14 overall, return to action on Oct. 27 when they play both Millikin University and DePauw University in Greencastle, IN.
The Mount jumped out to leads of 13-6 and 22-14 in game one against the Yellow Jackets tonight, thanks to an outstanding hitting attack. DC called timeout after trailing 22-14 but the Mount went on to build up a 27-17 lead en route to the 30-25 first game win. Richter played very well offensively in game two, helping the Lions to a 30-22 victory. Game three saw the two teams knotted at 9-all before the Mount pulled away. Brandi Corbello (Florence, KY/Boone County) recorded a kill to give the Lions an 18-12 advantage and Jen Fawns (Hamilton, OH/Hamilton Badin) had a kill to make it 24-16, the Lions' largest lead in game three. The Mount went on to take the third game, 30-22 on an ace by Jamie Cooper (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley).
Cooper finished with a team-high 14 digs while Katie Playko (Norwalk, OH/Norwalk St. Paul) had 35 assists.
10/23/07 Lions record home victory over HCAC-rival Anderson University
Becky Breetz (Southlake, TX/Carroll) had 22 kills and teammate Anna Richter (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) added 14 kills and eight digs to lead the Mount to a 3-1 win at home tonight against Anderson. The Mount is now 17-14 overall, 5-1 in the HCAC. The Lions are in second place in the conference, trailing Hanover (6-1).
The Mount dropped the first game to the Ravens, 21-30, but rebounded to win the final three games and claim the match. Caitlin Sargent (Covington, OH/Covington) added 13 kills as the Mount hit .300 as a team. Katie Playko (Norwalk, OH/Norwalk St. Paul) chipped in 43 assists while teammate Jamie Cooper (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) added a team-high 31 digs.
10/22/07 Mount outside hitter Anna Richter claims HCAC Player of the Week honors
The Mount’s Anna Richter (Fairfield, Ohio/Hamilton Badin), who averaged 13.6 kills and 15.8 digs per match for the Lions last week, has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the second time.
The sophomore outside hitter totaled 68 kills, 79 digs, and a .342 hitting percentage as the Mount finished the week 4-1. MSJ posted wins over Franklin, Manchester, Rose-Hulman, and Urbana before losing to 25th ranked Division II Northern Kentucky. Richter is second for the Lions in kills with 389 and second in digs with 371 this season.
The Lions stand third in the conference standings with a 4-1 mark and hold a 16-14 overall record.
10/21/07 Lions split home and away matches today; winning in four games at home against Rose-Hulman and losing in three games at Division II Northern Kentucky University
The Mount went 1-1 in action today, winning at home this morning in an HCAC match against Rose-Hulman, three games to one, and then dropping a 3-0 match at 25th-ranked NCAA Division II Northern Kentucky University. The Lions ran their win streak to nine before losing to NKU. The Mount is now 16-14 overall, 4-1 in the HCAC. They will host HCAC-rival Anderson on Oct. 23 on Senior Night.
Anna Richter (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) had 13 kills and 10 digs against Rose-Hulman while teammates Becky Breetz (Southlake, TX/Carroll) and Brandi Corbello (Florence, KY/Boone County) combined for 17 kills. Jamie Cooper (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) added a team-high 18 digs and four aces. The Lions won games one, three and four to take the match.
In the day's second match, at NKU, Richter led the way with 10 kills and 15 digs. Jessica Beck (Columbus, OH/Bishop Watterson) had two block solos and three block assists for the Mount, who fell, 24-30, 15-30, 22-30.
10/20/07 Mount records wins in back-to-back home matches against Manchester College and Urbana University
The Lions ran their win streak to eight today with 3-1 home victories over both HCAC-foe Manchester College and non-conference Urbana University. The Mount is now 15-13 overall and 3-1 in the HCAC. They resume action on Oct. 21 when they host HCAC-rival Rose-Hulman in an 11 a.m. match and then travel to play at Division II Northern Kentucky University later in the afternoon.
Becky Breetz (Southlake, TX/Carroll) tied her Lions season-high total of 25 kills against Manchester while teammate Caitlin Sargent (Covington, OH/Covington) added 17 kills. Anna Richter (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) had a team-high 27 digs while Katie Playko (Norwalk, OH/Norwalk St. Paul) chipped in a season-high 61 assists. The Lions dropped the first game against the Spartans but rebounded to win the final three games.
Richter added 18 kills and 19 digs against Urbana while Sargent chipped in 16 kills. Playko recorded 48 assists while teammate Jamie Cooper (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) had 22 digs and four aces. The Mount won the first two games and game four of the match.
10/18/07 Lions win sixth straight match with a three games to none home win over Franklin College
All 14 players saw action tonight for the Mount as they defeated conference-foe Franklin College at home, 30-16, 30-24, 30-27. The Mount, winners of six straight, are now 13-13 overall, 2-1 in the HCAC. This is the first time the team has been at or above the .500 level all season.The Mount resumes action on Oct. 20 when they host Manchester College and Urbana University.

10/10/07 Lions knock off cross-river rival Thomas More in five games
Becky Breetz (Southlake, TX/Carroll) had 18 kills and teammate Anna Richter (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) added 17 kills and 16 digs as the Mount defeated Thomas More College tonight on the road, 3-2. The Lions won games two and three, and then the clincher in game five, 15-10. The Mount returns to action on Oct. 12 when they play at Ohio Wesleyan University.
Jamie Cooper (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) chipped in 19 digs while Katie Playko (Norwalk, OH/Norwalk St. Paul) had 47 assists, seven kills and eight digs against the Saints.
10/9/07 Mount junior setter Katie Playko named HCAC Player of the Week
College of Mount St.Joseph’s Katie Playko (Norwalk, OH/Norwalk St. Paul), who was named the MVP at the SUNY Fredonia Tournament last week, has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week. The junior setter helped the Lions to a 4-0 record at the tournament, as she recorded 28 kills, a .342 hitting percentage, 179 assists, 28 digs, three aces, and four blocks.
10/6/07 Lions win final two matches at the SUNY Fredonia Tournament
The Mount moved two matches closer to a .500 record after they swept through the final two matches of play today at the SUNY Fredonia Tournament. The Lions defeated both SUNY Fredonia and SUNY Oneonta in four games and are now 11-13 this season. Junior setter Katie Playko (Norwalk, OH/Norwalk St. Paul) was named Tournament MVP while sophomore outside hitter Anna Richter (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) was named to the All-Tournament team.
The Lions resume play on Oct. 10 when they play at cross-river rival Thomas More College.
10/5/07 Mount posts two wins at the SUNY Fredonia Tournament
The College of Mount St. Joseph ended its five match losing streak today by winning both of their matches at the SUNY Fredonia Tournament. The Mount (9-13) defeated both Penn St. Behrend and Rochester by 3-0 game scores. Play will continue on Oct. 6 in the tournament with the Lions taking on host SUNY Fredonia and Oneonta.

The Mount opened the MSJ Fall Classic Tournament tonight with back-to-back losses, falling in four games to Heidelberg College and in three games to Ohio Northern University. The Lions (7-10) resume play in the two-day tournament on Sept. 29 when they face Mount Union and Baldwin-Wallace.
Becky Breetz (Southlake, TX/Carroll) had a team-high 15 kills while teammate Katie Playko (Norwalk, OH/Norwalk St. Paul) had team-high totals of 41 assists and 15 digs against Heidelberg. Anna Richter (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) and Breetz had nine kills; and Jamie Cooper (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) had a team-high 16 digs against ONU.
9/25/07 Mount opens 2007 HCAC play with a 3-0 win at Transylvania
The Lions defeated host Transylvania University tonight in three straight, 30-24, 30-19, 30-26 to open 2007 conference play. The Mount is now 7-8 on the season and 1-0 in the HCAC. They are back in action this weekend, Sept. 28 and Sept. 29 when they host the College of Mount St. Joseph Fall Classic Volleyball Tournament.

9/24/07 Anna Richter named HCAC Player of the Week
College of Mount St. Joseph’s Anna Richter (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin), who averaged over five kills and three digs per game last week for the Lions, has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week. The sophomore outside hitter had 21 kills and 13 digs in the Lions’ 3-1 win over Baldwin-Wallace and recorded 18 kills and nine digs in a 3-0 loss to No. 24 Hiram.
In seven games over the two matches, Richter totaled 39 kills, a .372 hitting percentage, 22 digs, four block assists, and two service aces. She ranks second on the Mount this season with 180 kills and stands third in digs with 150. MSJ holds a 6-8 overall record and will open up conference play September 25 at Transylvania.
9/22/07 Mount goes 1-1 at Hiram College
The College of Mount St. Joseph split two matches played today at Hiram College, defeating Baldwin-Wallace College, 3-1 and losing to host and 24th-ranked Hiram, 3-0. The Mount is now 6-8 on the season and returns to action on Sept. 25 with their HCAC-season opener at Transylvania University.
9/15/07 Mount completes Ohio/Michigan Border Battle play by winning one and losing one match to finish at 2-2 on the weekend
The Lions dropped a three-game match today to #10-ranked Calvin College but rebounded to take their second match of the day in three games over Alma College in the Ohio/Michigan Border Battle at Wittenberg University. The Lions finished the two-day weekend tournament with a 2-2 mark and are 5-7 overall.
They return to action on Sept. 22 when they travel to Hiram College and take on Baldwin-Wallace College and Hiram College.
9/14/07 Lions lose one match, win one match at the Ohio/Michigan Border Battle held at Wittenberg University
The College of Mount St. Joseph lost in four games to Hope College in their first match of the Ohio/Michigan Border Battle but bounced back to claim their second match of the day in four games over Adrian College. The Lions setback to Hope College was their second this season to the Flying Dutch. The Mount is now 4-6 on the season and resumes action in the Border Battle on Sept. 15 when they take on Calvin College and Alma College.
9/8/07 Lions win one, lose one in the second day of action at the MSJ Invitational Tournament; Anna Richter voted to the All-Tournament Team
The Mount completed play today in the MSJ Invitational Tournament, defeating Otterbein College in three games but losing their final match to 16th-ranked Capital University in four games. The Lions go to 3-5 on the season and will resume action at the Sept. 14/15 Border Battle held at Wittenberg University.
Caitlin Sargent (Covington, OH/Covington) had 12 kills, two block solos and three block assists while teammate Becky Breetz (Southlake, TX/Carroll) had seven kills with no errors in 11 attempts against Otterbein. Katie Playko (Norwalk, OH/Norwalk St. Paul) added 25 assists while Jamie Cooper (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley) chipped in 10 digs against the Cardinals.
Anna Richter (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) led the way for the Mount against Capital, collecting 19 kills and 17 digs. Brandi Corbello (Florence, KY/Boone County) had 14 kills while Playko added 45 assists. Richter was named to the All-Tournament team.
9/7/07 Mount defeats SUNY Geneseo and loses to Walsh College in first day of play at the MSJ Invitational Tournament
The Lions began the first day of action at the MSJ Invitational Tournament with a three-game win over SUNY Geneseo but dropped their second match of the day in three games to NAIA Walsh University. Walsh is ranked 13th in the NAIA National poll.
The Mount resumes action in the tournament on Sept. 8 with a noon match against Otterbein College and a match later in the day against an opponent to be determined.
Statistical leaders in the two matches today were Becky Breetz (Southlake, TX/Carroll), 21 kills; Katie Playko (Norwalk, OH/Norwalk St. Paul), 50 assists; and Jamie Cooper (Cincinnati, OH/McAuley), 26 digs.
9/1/07 Lions record a 1-1 record in second day action at the Ohio Northern University Invitational
The Mount won their first match of the 2007 season today with a three games to one victory over Carnegie Mellon University. The Lions, however, then dropped a hard-fought four-game match to Hope College. The Lions (1-3) will return to action this coming weekend when they host the MSJ Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Senior Becky Breetz (Southlake, TX/Carroll) and junior Katie Playko (Norwalk, OH/Norwalk St. Paul) were named to the Ohio Northern University Invitational All-Tournament team.
8/31/07 Mount drops two, five-game matches at the Ohio Northern University Invitational
The Lions opened the 2007 season at the Ohio Northern University Invitational today, losing in five games to both the College of Wooster (1-1) and Ohio Northern University (2-0). They return to action at the ONU Invitational on Sept. 1, when they take on Carnegie Mellon University (1-1) at 11:15 a.m. and Hope College (1-1) at 1:15 p.m.
8/11/07 Lions chosen as undisputed number one selection in the HCAC coaches preseason poll
The College of Mount St. Joseph volleyball team has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2007 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship. In a poll of the nine HCAC head coaches, the Mount received the maximum 81 total points and nine first-place votes.
Hanover College placed second in the poll with 72 points, followed by Anderson, Franklin, Defiance, Bluffton, Manchester, Transylvania and Rose-Hulman.
8/10/07 Mount volleyball team wins AVCA academic team award
The Mount’s volleyball team has earned a GamePlan/AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2006-2007 season.
The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) recently announced that 303 schools have earned a similar award for the past school year. The award, which covers all three NCAA divisions and the NAIA, was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, and honors collegiate and high school teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale and a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale during the school year.
Nominating head coaches were AVCA members. Each school will receive a plaque, and each player a certificate commemorating the designation.
5/23/07 Lakeland High School’s Lauren Terwilliger to attend the Mount and play volleyball for the Lions
The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that Lakeland High School (LaGrange, IN) senior Lauren Terwilliger has committed to attend the Mount and play volleyball for the Lions in the fall of 2007.
Terwilliger, a 6-foot-1 right-side hitter, played high school volleyball for four years, including three as a varsity starter. She has played Junior Olympic volleyball for the Fort Wayne Volleyball Club and has four years of J.O. experience. She led her high school team in kills during her junior season; and was a team captain and had the most blocks her senior season. She was named all-NECC in 2006-07, and was an all-area honorable mention selection for 2006-07.
In addition, Terwilliger was on her school’s honor roll, was in the Spanish National Honor Society, and won an Academic Honors Diploma. She is also active in many other high school groups and activities as well as having played high school basketball and competed in high school track & field for three seasons. Her high school volleyball coaches were Jamie Biddle and Kerri Myers.
Lauren is the daughter of Dick and Patty Terwilliger and is planning on majoring in Nursing.
Fifty-three NCAA Division III schools were given the award, which exceeded its previous high mark of 48, set in 2003-04.
6/7/07 Mount volleyball team to host annual golf outing
The College of Mount St. Joseph third annual Volleyball team Golf Outing will be held at Neumann Golf Course on July 22, 2007. Start time is 11:00 a.m. Cost to become a hole sponsor is $100, cost to play is $75 per player (twosome and foursomes welcome). Players will enjoy dinner (included), basket raffles and door prizes.

5/9/07 Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy's Kelley Gims to attend the Mount and play volleyball for the Lions
The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy senior Kelley Gims has committed to attend the Mount and play volleyball for the Lions in the fall of 2007.
Gims, a 5-foot-7 outside hitter, played high school volleyball for four years, including three as a varsity starter. She has played Junior Olympic volleyball for Lineshot and has four years of J.O. experience. She was a first team all-league selection from 2004-2006, was third team all-city in 2004-2005 and first team all-city in 2006. In addition, Gims was a league Player of the Year in 2006. She won the anatomy and physiology award while at CHCA. Gims played for Cherrie Bailey while at CHCA.
Kelley is the daughter of Kathy and Michael Gims, and is planning on majoring in Graphic Design.
4/12/07 Clermont Northeastern High School’s Lyndsey Waldman and Hamilton Badin High School’s Jennifer Fawns to attend the Mount and play volleyball for the Lions
The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that Clermont Northeastern High School senior Lyndsey Waldman and Hamilton Badin High School senior Jennifer Fawns have committed to attend the Mount and play volleyball for the Lions in the fall of 2007.
Waldman, a 5-foot-9 setter/hitter, played high school volleyball for four years, including three as a varsity starter. She has played for the Cincinnati Classic Junior Olympic team and has three years of J.O. experience. In addition, Waldman was a two-time all-league player, and was second team all-district/city and chosen for the District 16 Senior Showcase. Waldman has also played basketball and softball, and won her school’s Blue and Gold Award for volleyball and softball. She is in the National Honor Society, in Student Government, on the Yearbook Staff and has been on the Honor Roll or High Honor Roll every quarter in high school. The Academic All-Conference/State honoree has a 3.98 GPA and is in numerous other groups and extracurricular activities. Lyndsay is the daughter of Peggy and Robert Waldman, and is planning on majoring in Sports Management.
Fawns, a 5-foot-10 middle hitter, played high school volleyball for four years, including two as a varsity starter. She has played for the Borderline Junior Olympic team and has seven years of J.O. experience. Fawns won second team all-GGCL honors, was a first team all-city selection and played in the Senior Showcase. She won second academic honors her junior year. Jennifer is the daughter of Patty and Mike Fawns, and is planning on majoring in Early Childhood Education.
