3/6/08 Ashleigh Stallkamp and Kat O'Neill collect All-HCAC honors
Senior Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding, OH/Paulding) was named Honorable Mention All-HCAC while teammate Kat O'Neill (Burlington, KY/Conner) has been named to the HCAC All-Freshman team and an Honorable Mention All-Conference selection.
Stallkamp was also an Honorable Mention All-HCAC selection in 2004-2005 and a First Team All-Conference honoree in 2005-2006 while at Bluffton University She led the Lions this season in points, steals and blocks.
O'Neill was first in assists; and second in points and steals for the Mount during the 2007-2008 season.
2/23/08 Mount ends season with a 77-54 loss at Franklin College
Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding, OH/Paulding) had 19 points in her final collegiate game today as the Lions' dropped a 77-54 decision at Franklin College. The Mount completes the 2007-08 season with a 6-19 overall mark, 5-11 in the HCAC while Franklin is 11-13, 8-8.
Stallkamp also added a team-high seven rebounds while teammate Maria Eichhold (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove) had 12 points and four rebounds in her final college game. Senior Shanika Logan (Cincinnati, OH/Winton Woods) closed out her college career with four points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals.
Franklin shot 61 percent in the first half en route to a 43-32 lead at the intermission. They converted 25-of-32 free throws in the game. The Mount out-rebounded the Grizzlies, 37-30.
2/20/08 Bluffton pins a 56-48 loss on the visiting Lions
Bluffton University held a 31-18 lead at the half and withstood a furious Mount second half comeback tonight as the Beavers won at home over the Lions, 56-48. The Mount is now 6-18 overall, 5-10 in the HCAC while Bluffton goes to 9-15, 3-12. The Lions end the season on Feb. 23 with a game at Franklin College.
The Lions cut the deficit to three points, 46-43 with just over five minutes left to play tonight but could get no closer as they dropped their fourth straight game. Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding, OH/Paulding) had 14 points while teammate Megan Smith (Milford, OH/Milford/Kenyon) had 12 points and seven rebounds. Bluffton out-shot and out-rebounded the Lions. The Beavers had four players score in double figures.
2/16/08 Spalding University routs Mount in a non-conference game, 75-58
The College of Mount St. Joseph lost today 75-58 to Spalding University at home in the Harrington Center on Senior Day. The Lions fall to 6-17 overall while Spalding improves to 9-14 overall. The Mount’s next game is February 20 at conference-foe Bluffton.
The Lions had a rough first half, getting doubled up by the Golden Eagles, 42-21. The showed some signs of life early in the second half to cut the score to 11 with just over eight minutes to play. They were unable to chip away any further, however, and Spalding pulled away to a 17-point win. Lauren Schaller (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) led the team in scoring with 12 points followed by Megan Smith (Milford, OH/Milford) with 11, who also contributed eight rebounds.
Seniors Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding, OH/Paulding), Shanika Logan (Cincinnati, OH/Winton Woods), and Maria Eichhold (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove) were honored before the game in their last home game of their careers.
2/13/08 Mount falls to Transylvania, 63-53, and drops further out of playoff race
The College of Mount St. Joseph lost tonight, 63-53, to Transylvania at the Harrington Center. The loss drops the Mount to 6-16 overall and 5-9 in the conference. Transylvania improves to 12-10 overall and 8-5 in conference play. The Lions fall to two games out of the sixth and final playoff spot for the HCAC Tournament. The Mount’s next game is February 16 versus Spalding University on Senior Day. Tip-off is 3:00 p.m.
The Lions had trouble finding the basket all night, only shooting 35% from the floor in the game. Trailing 28-22 at the half, the Lions were unable to muster any momentum in the second and let the Pioneers pull away. Down by eight, 59-51, with just over two and a half minutes remaining, the deficit proved too great and the Lions were unable to rally. Lauren Schaller (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) had a double-double scoring 14 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Kat O’Neill (Burlington, KY/Conner) contributed ten points, while Shanika Logan (Cincinnati, OH/Winton Woods) and Chelsey Doellman (Union, KY/Ryle) each added eight points.
2/09/08 Lions lose in conference play to Franklin, 74-67
The College of Mount St. Joseph lost today to Franklin College, 74-67, at home in the Harrington Center. The loss drops the Mount to 6-15 overall, 5-8 in the HCAC, and a game and a half out of sixth place in the conference. Franklin improves to 9-11 overall and 6-6 in conference play. The Lions return to action on February 13 versus Transylvania University at home in the Harrington Center.
The Lions played tough in the first, resulting in a tied game, 35-35, at the intermission. The Mount, however, came out flat in the second half as the Grizzlies were able to take the lead for much of the second half. Foul trouble in the final few minutes for the Lions allowed Franklin to put the game just out of reach for the Mount.
Chelsey Doellman (Union, KY/Ryle) led the Lions in scoring with 13 points followed closely by Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding, OH/Paulding) with 12. Cayla Stutz (Hamersville, OH/Felicity-Franklin) chipped in nine points off the bench. Lauren Schaller (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) contributed a game-high eight rebounds.
2/7/09 Senior center Maria Eichhold picks up Academic All-District honor
College of Mount St. Joseph senior center Maria Eichhold (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Second Team. Eichhold has played in all 20 of the Mount's games this season, including 19 starts, and is averaging 6.4 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. She is majoring in Social Work and has a 3.96 GPA.
Eichhold was a Third Team All-District selection last season. She has 756 points in her career.
2/6/08 Mount holds off Rose-Hulman to win, 47-42
The Lions were able to pick up a big conference win tonight at the Harrington Center, 47-42. With the win, the Mount improves to 6-14 overall and a 5-7 conference record. Rose-Hulman falls to 10-11 overall and 6-6 in conference play. The next game for the Mount is February 9 at home versus Franklin College. The Lions are 1/2 game out of sixth place in the HCAC with four conference games remaining. The top six HCAC regular season teams will play in the HCAC Tournament.
The Lions had an impressive first half and led by a score of 28-19. The Pioneers were able to rally in the second half, however, and closed to within three, 44-41, with 33 seconds left in the game. Kat O’Neill (Burlington, KY/Conner) sealed the win by making three of her four free-throw shots with less than 30 seconds left in the game.
O’Neill also led the Lions in scoring with 13 points. Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding, OH/Paulding) added eight points and seven rebounds while Megan Smith (Milford, OH/Milford) contributed a team-leading eight rebounds.
2/4/08 Mount to host Alumni Recognition Day on Feb. 9
The College of Mount St. Joseph women's basketball program will recognize basketball alumni at halftime of the Feb. 9 Franklin College game. All alumni in attendance will receive free admission to the 3 p.m. game that day against the Grizzlies and will be noted at halftime. They will also attend an off-campus function following the game.

2/2/08 Lions fall to Defiance in conference play, 72-63
The College of Mount St. Joseph Lions lost today on the road, 72-63, to Defiance College. The loss drops them to a 5-14 record overall and 4-7 in conference play. Defiance improves to 7-11 overall and 3-8 in the conference. The Lions’ next game is at home February 6 versus Rose-Hulman.
The Mount kept it close in the first half and found themselves down only by five points, 29-24, at the intermission. The Lions cut the lead to three, 41-38 with 14:02 left in the second half, but were unable to come any closer the rest of the game. Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding, OH/Paulding) had a big second half; scoring 18 to finish with a game-high total of 22. Lauren Schaller (Cincinnati, OH/ McNicholas) led the team in rebounds with 12. Maria Eichhold (Greenwood, IN/ Center Grove) contributed ten points as well as eight rebounds.
1/30/08 Lions win in first overtime game of the season, defeating Hanover, 75-66
The Mount won a hard-fought game in overtime tonight; beating Hanover College, 75-66. The win raises the Mount’s record to 5-13 overall and 4-6 in conference play. Hanover falls to 12-7 overall and 6-4 in the conference. The Lions next see action Feb. 2 against at Defiance College. Hanover entered the game in third place in the HCAC.
After a close first period, the Lions found themselves trailing at the half, 35-31. Tough play in the second, however, allowed the Mount to come back and take several leads. Foul trouble late in the second half by the Lions helped Hanover tie the game at 59-all at the end of regulation. Led by Chelsey Doellman (Union, KY/Ryle), the Mount’s solid play in overtime gave the Lions a huge inter-conference win. Doellman scored eight points in overtime alone and ended the night with a total of 12 points.
Kat O’Neill (Burlington, KY/Conner) led the Mount in scoring with 16 while Shanika Logan (Cincinnati, OH/Winton Woods) also scored in double-figures with 11. Lauren Schaller (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) also added a team-high seven rebounds.
1/26/08 Lions fall to Anderson, 71-43
The Mount lost tonight 71-43 at Anderson University. The loss drops the Lions to 4-13 overall and 3-6 in conference play. Anderson improves to 11-6 overall and 7-3 in conference play. The Lions’ next game is Jan. 30 versus Hanover at home in the Harrington Center.
Down 38-16 at the half, the Lions were unable to escape the 22-point hole in the second half and fell to the Ravens by a final margin of 28 points. The Lions were out-shot 53% to 21% in the first half alone. Leading the scoring for the Mount was Maria Eichhold (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove) with a team-high 13. Eichhold also tied Lauren Schaller (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) for the team lead in rebounds with six. Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding, OH/Paulding) contributed nine points.
1/23/08 Lions fall 87-75 in conference match-up against Transylvania
The Mount lost its twelfth game of the season tonight to Transylvania at Transylvania University, 87-75. With the loss, the Lions fall to 4-12 overall and 3-5 in conference play. Transylvania evens their record to 8-8 overall and 4-3 in the conference. The next game for the Mount is Jan. 23 Anderson University.
The Mount’s tough play early kept the game close in the first half and the Lions only trailed by four, 39-35, at the end of the first. Transylvania’s 56% shooting allowed them to pull away in the second half however; one time leading the Lions by 17 points with 2:59 remaining in the game. Kat O’Neill (Burlington, KY/Conner) had 20 points for the Mount while teammate Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding, OH/Paulding) contributed a team-high 23 points and four steals. Lauren Schaller (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) had a team-high eight rebounds.
1/19/08 Mount falls to Manchester College, 56-43
The College of Mount St. Joseph fell in conference play today to Manchester College 56-43 at the Harrington Center. The Lions slip to 4-11 overall and 3-4 in conference play. Manchester improves to 12-4 overall and 7-0 in conference play. The Mount’s next game is Jan. 23 at Transylvania.
In a game dominated by the Spartans, the Lions were unable to sustain any form of offensive attack and trailed the entire game. The Lions’ shooting in the first half was as cold as the temperatures outside; only managing nine points on 11% field goal shooting. The Lions were able to pick it up in the second and score 34 points. The first half deficit of 32-9, however, proved to large of a hole to climb out of and the Lions lost to first place Manchester by at total of 13.
Leading the scoring for the Lions was Shanika Logan (Cincinnati, OH/Winton Woods) with eight points followed closely by Maria Eichhold (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove) with seven points.
1/16/08 Mount manages comeback victory in conference play vs. Bluffton, 59-48
The Mount earned their third conference victory of the season at the Harrington Center against Bluffton University winning tonight, 59-48. The Lions improved to 4-10 overall and 3-3 in conference play while Bluffton fell to 6-9 overall and 1-6 in the conference. The Mount’s next game is Jan. 19 at home against Manchester in the Harrington Center. Tip-off is at 5:00 p.m.
Trailing most of the first half, the Lions managed a comeback about mid-way through the second half of play. With Bluffton leading 31-28 at halftime, the Mount outscored the Beavers 31-17 in the final 20 seconds of play. They went up for good, 41-40, with 8:24 in the second half on a jump shot by Kat O’Neill (Burlington, KY/Conner). O’Neill posted 14 points on five-of-seven shooting. Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding, OH/Paulding) led the team in scoring with 15 points while also contributing on defense with three blocks and a steal. Leading the team in rebounds was Lauren Schaller (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas), who grabbed 13 boards.
The Lions out-shot Bluffton 47 to 27 percent from the field, and hit six-of-16 three-point attempts.
1/12/08 Lions drop road game at Spalding University, 85-77
Host Spalding University broke open a close game in the second half today en route to an 85-77 win over the Mount. The Lions are now 3-10 overall while Spalding goes to 4-10. The Mount resumes action on Jan. 16 when they host conference-foe Bluffton University at 7:30 p.m.
The two teams were tied today at the half, 35-all. Brooke Sowards (Morrow, OH/Little Miami) led three Lions' players in double figures today, tossing in 19 points. Sowards was seven-of-10 shooting, including four-of-five from behind the three-point arc. Kat O'Neill (Burlington, KY/Conner) added 16 points and seven assists while Gina Gonzales (Dearborn Hts., MI/Fr. Gabriel Richard) chipped in 14 points. The Lions were out-rebounded 43-32 but out-shot their opponents from the field, 45 to 39 percent.
1/9/08 Mount loses at Rose-Hulman, 54-42
The Mount lost a conference game tonight against Rose-Hulman at Hulbert Arena, 54-42. The Lions fall to 3-9 overall and 2-3 in the conference. Rose-Hulman improves to 5-7 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The Lions next game is Saturday, January 12 at Spalding University.
Despite a close game in the first half, the Lions were unable to stop the Engineers from coming back in the second half. With the Mount leading at the half 18-17, Rose-Hulman was able to come back to score 37 in the second half. Rose-Hulman took over the lead for good with 8:07 in the second half. Contributing to Rose-Hulman’s win was their 20-for-28 showing from the free throw line. Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding, OH/Paulding) scored a game-high 21 points.
1/5/08 Mount earns third victory of the season defeating Defiance College, 69-58
The Mount had two players in double figures tonight and had a strong inside game tonight at the Lions defeated Defiance College by a score of 69-58 at the Harrington Center tonight. The Lions improve to 3-8 overall and 2-2 in conference play while Defiance falls to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The Lions next game is January 9 at conference-foe Rose-Hulman.
The Mount held the lead for much of the night and was able to hold off a Defiance rally midway through the second half to cruise to an eleven point win. Contributing to the win was the Lions’ strong showing from the free-throw line, as they connected on 19-of-22. Kat O’Neill (Burlington, KY/Conner) tossed in 12 points as did Chelsey Doellman (Union, KY/Ryle. Maria Eichhold (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove) contributed nine rebounds to the teams’ total of 41 rebounds.
12/18/07 Mount falls to Savannah College of Art & Design, 71-58, in the Virgin Islands Tournament
The Mount trailed today by 17 points at the half and battled back to cut the deficit to six points late in the second half before losing to Savannah College of Art & Design, 71-58, in the Virgin Islands Tournament. The Mount, which has dropped three straight games, is now 2-8 on the season while SCAD goes to 9-6. The Lions return to action on Jan. 5 when they host conference-foe Defiance College.
The Lions trailed by as many as 19 points in the game, with 18:20 to play, before making a run at the Bees. Megan Smith (Milford, OH/Milford) and Maria Eichhold (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove) helped key the second half comeback as the Mount knocked the deficit down to 59-53 with 3:42 remaining in the game. SCAD then went on a 10-1 run over the next three minutes to put the game away.
Smtih led the Mount with a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds while Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding, OH/Paulding) chipped 11 points and eight rebounds. The Mount out-rebounded SCAD, 46-38 and out-shot their opponents, 38 to 33 percent but committed 29 turnovers to 16 miscues for the Bees. SCAD was 27-of-40 from the free throw line while the Mount connected on nine-of-13 from the line.
12/17/07 Lions lose to Southwestern (KS) College, 69-56, in the Virgin Islands Tournament
The College of Mount St. Joseph trailed by a 30-22 score at the half and lost by a 69-56 decision today to Southwestern (KS) College in the Virgin Islands Tournament. The Lions are now 2-7 on the season and conclude tournament play on Dec. 18 when they take on Savannah College of Art & Design.
Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding, OH/Paulding) had a game-high 16 points for the Mount while teammate Shanika Logan (Cincinnati, OH/Winton Woods) added 11 points. Lauren Schaller (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) chipped in 10 rebounds.
Southwestern was 20-of-37 from the free throw line to the Mount's nine-of-24 from the charity stripe in the game. The Lions also had 27 turnovers while Southwestern committed 16 miscues. The Mount did out-rebound their opponent, 48-34.
12/15/07 Mount falls to 10th-ranked Thomas More College, 90-43
Host Thomas More College, ranked tenth in the country in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, jumped out to a 20-point halftime lead and cruised to a 90-43 win today over the Mount. The Lions are now 2-6 overall while Thomas More goes to 8-0. The Mount returns to action on Dec. 17 when they play Southwestern (KS) College in the Virgin Islands Tournament.
The Saints jumped out to a 15-2 to lead in the game and led by as many as 27 points in the first half. All 19 players on the Mount's roster played in the game, as Megan Smith (Milford, OH/Milford) led the way with nine points. The Lions were out-shot 58 to 30 percent from the field.
12/8/07 Mount ends two-game losing streak with a 74-72 home win against Anderson
The College of Mount St. Joseph had an 12-point lead with 16:07 remaining in the game today at home and held on down the stretch to post a 74-72 win against HCAC-foe Anderson University. The Mount, which ended a two-game losing streak, is now 2-5 overall, 1-2 in the HCAC. Anderson goes to 3-4, 1-2. The Lions resume action on Dec. 15 when they play at cross-river rival Thomas More College (5-0), ranked 11th in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll. Tip-off is 3:00 p.m.
The Lions jumped out to a 32-28 lead at the half today, thanks to a swarming defense that held the visiting Ravens to 27 percent field goal shooting in the first half. Anderson, however, out-scored the Mount 15-4 in the first half from the free throw line.
The Mount built its lead to 12 points early in the second half when Shanika Logan (Cincinnati, OH/Winton Woods) scored on a lay-up. Anderson got back into the game over the next three-plus minutes, tying the game at 44-all with 12:47 left. The Lions drove their lead up to nine points, over the next 4:28, leading 55-46, thanks in part to strong inside play. Anderson would get the deficit down to four points, 61-57, with 3:13 to play and trailed by a 66-65 margin with 1:40 left after a three-pointer, but would get no closer. The Mount hit five of their next six free throws down the stretch for the win.
Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding, OH/Paulding) scored a game-high 21 points, including 14 in the second half, and had six rebounds. Teammate Kat O’Neill (Burlington, KY/Conner) added 10 points. Lauren Schaller (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. The Lions connected on 55 percent from the field, to Anderson’s 33 percent. Nine players got into the scoring column for the Mount.
12/5/07 Mount suffers 63-56 road loss to Hanover
The Lions jumped out to a 33-29 first half lead tonight but were overtaken in the second half, as Hanover pulled off a 63-56 home win over the Mount. The Lions are now 1-5 overall, 0-2 in the HCAC while Hanover improves to 3-2, 1-1. The Mount returns home on Dec. 8 to take on Anderson.
Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding, OH/Paluding) had 14 points to lead the Lions. Hanover was 15-for-31 from the free throw line while the Mount was two-for-six from the charity stripe.
12/1/07 Lions lose at Manchester, 59-55
The Mount out-shot host Manchester College from the field and the free throw line today, but lost the game, 59-55. The Lions are now 1-4 overall, 0-1 in the HCAC while Manchester goes to 4-2, 1-0. The Mount is back in action on Dec. 5 when they play at HCAC-foe Hanover College.
Manchester jumped out to a 24-18 lead at the half, but the Mount, behind 60 percent shooting in the second half tied the game at 35-all with 11:35 remaining in the game. The Lions grabbed the lead in the second half at 37-36 on a basket by Kat O'Neill (Burlington, KY/Conner) with 10:50 left but fell behind again, 50-41 with 5:54 to play. Maria Eichhold (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove) and Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding, OH/Paulding) helped get te Lions back into the game, and Chelsey Doellman (Union, KY/Ryle) scored with 2:44 left to cut the Manchester advantage to 52-50.
Stallkamp hit a shot with 17 seconds left to keep the deficit at two points, 57-55, but the Mount would get no closer. Manchester missed two free throws with 11 seconds left but grabbed the offensive rebound on the second miss. The Spartans then hit two of their final four free throw attempts in the game, and forced a Mount turnover with five seconds left to seal the win. Manchester scored 13 points in the second half off of Mount turnovers.
The Lions out-shot Manchester from the field (42 to 35 percent) and from the free throw line (69 to 50 percent) but committed 23 turnovers to the Spartans' 15 miscues. Stallkamp finished with 13 points while O'Neill added 10 points. Lauren Schaller ( Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) had a game-high nine rebounds.
11/26/07 Lions guard Kat O'Neill named HCAC Player of the Week
College of Mount St.Joseph’s Kat O’Neill (Burlington, KY/Conner), who led the Lions to a 1-1 record on the week, has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week. O’Neill had 13 points, three rebounds, and three steals in the Mount’s 66-52 loss to Wittenberg, and scored 15 points on six of eight shooting against Earlham.
In the 89-69 win over the Quakers, the freshman guard had a game-high seven assists, three rebounds, and two steals in her first college start. For the week, O’Neill averaged 14 points, 4.5 assists, three rebounds, and 2.5 steals over the two games.
11/24/07 Mount records an 89-69 home win over Earlham College as senior Ashleigh Stallkamp scores her 1,000th career point
Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding, OH/Paulding) tossed in a team-high 16 points, including 14 in the second half, helping bust open a close game as the Mount registered an 89-69 home win tonight over Earlham College. The Mount is now 1-3 on the season while Earlham falls to 0-4.
Stallkamp, a senior, converted a lay-up with 6:15 remaining in the game, to give the Lions a 74-54 lead, her 12th point of the game and 1,000th for her career. Stallkamp played her first two seasons of college basketball for Bluffton University. Teammates Kat O’Neill (Burlington, KY/Conner), 15 points; Maria Eichhold (Greenwood, IN/Center Grove), 13 points, and Lauren Schaller (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas), 10 points, all scored in double figures for the Mount.
The Lions out-rebounded the Quakers, 55-39, as Schaller led all players with 11 rebounds, collecting the first double-double of her career. O’Neill chipped in seven assists while Stallkamp and Eichhold grabbed eight rebounds each, helping the Mount dominate on the inside.
The Mount out-shot Earlham 47 to 35 percent from the field and was 19-fo-27 from the line, compared to the Quakers’ 14-of-26 from the charity stripe.
11/20/07 Lions drop a 66-52 home game to Wittenberg University
Visiting Wittenberg University led by a two-point margin at the half, 30-28, and led by a 43-40 with just over 9 1/2 minutes left before pulling away tonight for a 66-52 win. The Mount goes to 0-3 with the loss and will play next at home on Nov. 24 against Earlham College. Wittenberg goes to 1-0 on the season.

11/17/07 Mount opens the 2007-08 season in the Franklin Savings Tip-off Classic
The Lions began the 2007-08 season yesterday hosting the Franklin Savings Tip-off Classic, losing to Illinois College 77-74 and falling to nationally-ranked Calvin College, 79-41. The Mount, 0-2, will return to action on Nov. 20 when they host Wittenberg University.
In the lone game today at the Mount’s Harrington Center, Calvin claimed the Classic Championship with a 62-52 victory over Illinois College.
Illinois College jumped out to a 34-22 first half lead against the Mount in the first game on Saturday, but the Lions fought back late the second half, thanks in part to the three-point shooting of freshmen Brooke Sowards (Morrow, OH/Little Miami) and Kelsey Smith (Louisville, KY/Assumption). The Lions out-shot Illinois College 55 to 48 percent from the field in the second half. Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding, OH/Paulding) led all scorers with 27 points while Sowards had 11 points. The Mount forced 29 turnovers in the game.
Calvin College led by just a three-point margin over the Mount in game two yesterday, before pulling away for the win. The Knights out-shot the Lions 50 percent to 24 percent in the final 20 minutes of play. Stallkamp led the Mount with 10 points.
Stallkamp was named to the All-Classic Team. Calvin’s Marcia Harris was named MVP. Calvin teammates Kristi Brummel and Brook VanEck were named to the All-Classic Team while Illinois College players Candace Norville and Janelle Kuhn were also selected to the All-Classic squad.
10/29/07 Lions picked for eighth place in the HCAC Women's Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll
The Mount was chosen for eighth place in the conference this season in the HCAC Women's Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll. Manchester was selected as the favorite to repeat as HCAC Champion, followed by Transylvania, Anderson, Franklin and Defiance. Rose-Hulman was picked for sixth place followed by Hanover, the Mount and Bluffton. Manchester received five first place votes, while Transy picked up two first place votes and Rose-Hulman garnered the remaining first place vote.
The Lions open 2007-08 season play when they host the Nov. 16-17 Franklin Savings Tip-off Tournament. The Mount will play on Nov. 16 against St. Joseph's (NY) College at 5 p.m.. The consolation game will be at 1 p.m. and the championship game will take place at 5 p.m. on Nov. 17.
7/31/07 Mount receives commitment from Little Miami High School’s Brooke Sowards
The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that Little Miami High School’s Brooke Sowards will attend the Mount and play basketball this winter for the Lions.
Sowards, a 5-foot-5 guard, averaged 10 points and two assists per game her senior season, and shot 39 percent from behind the three-point arc. Sowards was a first team all-FAVC selection and helped her team to the Final Four. She was on her school’s Honor Roll, was named FAVC All-Academic, was in the top 10 percent of her class, and was in the National Honor Society, Spanish Club and FCCLA. Her high school coach was Mark Short.
Brooke is the daughter of Marsha and Randy Sowards. She is planning on majoring in Biology.
6/20/07 Fr. Gabriel Richard (Ann Arbor, MI) High School’s Gina Gonzales to attend the Mount and play basketball for the Lions
The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that Fr. Gabriel Richard (Ann Arbor, MI) High School senior Gina Gonzales has committed to attend the College of Mount St. Joseph and play basketball in the winter of 2007 for the Lions.
Gonzales, a 5-foot-8 guard, averaged 12 points and five assists per game during her senior season. She was an 85 percent free throw shooter over her junior and senior seasons, and shot 35 percent and 40 percent from the three-point arc during her last two seasons of prep play. She also scored a career-high 30 points in a game her junior campaign.
In addition, Gonzales garnered her team’s Coaches Award, made the all-academic team, and was an all-Catholic honorable mention selection and all-league team member. Gonzales also played softball while in high school and won all-district honors in that sport. She was team captain in both sports, was in the President Varsity Club, named a Michigan Competitive scholar and was in the National Honor Society.
Gina’s high school coach was Pet Schooch and she is the daughter of Margaret and Fred Gonzales. She is planning on majoring in Sports Management.
5/23/07 Eastern Greene High School’s Brittany Sparks to attend the Mount and play basketball for the Lions
The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that Eastern Greene (Bloomfield, IN) High School senior Brittany Sparks has committed to attend the College of Mount St. Joseph and play basketball in the winter of 2007 for the Lions.
Sparks, a 5-foot-6 guard, was a four-year starter in high school who averaged nearly seven points per game during her career and led her team in assists all four seasons. She helped lead Eastern Greene to conference titles during her freshman and sophomore seasons, while winning both academic all-conference and basketball all-conference awards during her sophomore and senior campaigns. In addition, Sparks was named Class 2A honorable mention all-state following her sophomore season. She also played four years of softball and volleyball in high school.
Sparks was also awarded an academic honors diploma, was in the National Honor Society, was her class’ vice president all four years, and was a member of the Science Club, in the Buddy Program and in the school’s band.
Brittany is the daughter of Richard and Sheila Sparks and is undecided on her college major.
5/21/07 Kettering Alter High School’s Sarah Tahy to attend the Mount and play basketball for the Lions
The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that Kettering Alter High School senior Sarah Tahy has committed to attend the College of Mount St. Joseph and play basketball in the winter of 2007 for the Lions.
Tahy, a 6-foot forward, was at Chaminade-Julienne for her first two years of high school and then at Alter for two years. She averaged 7.3 points, six rebounds, 1.7 steals, 1.4 assists and one block per game her senior season. In addition, Tahy was chosen to play in the District 15 All-Star game and was varsity letter winner for four years. Her high school team won the state championship during her sophomore season. Tahy also played AAU basketball for the Dayton Lady Hoopsters. Her high school coach at Alter was Christina Hart.
Sarah is the daughter of Connie and Steve Tahy. She is planning to major in Sports Management at the Mount.

4/19/07 Seton High School’s Patricia Siemer and Conner High School’s Kathryn O’Neill to attend the Mount and play basketball for the Lions
The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that Seton High School senior Patricia Siemer and Conner High School senior Kathryn O’Neill has committed to attend the College of Mount St. Joseph and play basketball in the winter of 2007 for the Lions.
Siemer, 5-foot-8 guard/forward, averaged 6.4 points and four rebounds per game last season. She was second in the GGCL in assists; second on her team in field goal percentage and third on her team in rebounds. In addition, she won an academic pin and academic letter while at Seton and was active on the school’s newspaper and yearbook staffs, as well as being involved with service learning.
Siemer played for Tracy Naber while at Seton.
Patricia is the daughter of Terri and Mike Siemer. She is planning to major in Physical Therapy at the Mount.
O’Neill, a 5-foot-8 guard, averaged 13.5 points, 3.8 assists and 2.0 steals per game last season. She was selected to the Northern Kentucky Coaches Association All-Star team during her junior and senior seasons, and was the District 33 Most Valuable Player. In addition, she was in the National Honor Society, was the yearbook editor and in the Future Business Leaders of America.
O’Neill played for Kim Warfield at Conner.
Kathryn is the daughter of Susan and Bill O’Neill. She is planning to major in Sports Management at the Mount.
4/5/07 Mercy High School’s Abby LaRosa to attend the Mount and play basketball for the Lions
The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that Mother of Mercy High School senior Abby LaRosa has committed to attend the College of Mount St. Joseph and play basketball in the winter of 2007 for the Lions.
LaRosa, a 5-foot-3 guard, won the scholar athlete award at her school and is ranked fifth in her class of 154 at Mercy High School. She holds a 4.4 weighted GPA and has gained first honors every quarter while in high school; in addition to being in the National Honor Society for grades 10-12. She played softball and basketball for four years each while at Mercy and has attended numerous basketball camps, both as a player and as an instructor. LaRosa has also been involved with a number of extra curricular groups while in high school, including Student Council and the Peer to Peer program.
Abby is the daughter of Loretta and Joseph LaRosa. She is planning to major in Nursing at the Mount.
3/15/07 Louisville (KY) Assumption High School’s Kelsey Smith to attend the Mount and play basketball for the Lions
The College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio officially announces that Louisville (Kentucky) Assumption High School senior Kelsey Smith has committed to attend the College of Mount St. Joseph and play basketball in the winter of 2007 for the Lions.
Smith, a 5-foot-10 guard/wing, helped lead her team to the Kentucky High School State Athletic Association tournament semifinals this season, and a seventh region championship. She connected on 33 percent from behind the three-point arc this season, including school-best seven-of-nine three-pointers a Jan. 26 game against Scott County. Smith, who played basketball in high school for four years, was a two-year varsity letter winner, and she was also active in field hockey, softball, track & field and lacrosse.
A team captain this season, she was also involved with the Future Business Leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and was a school ambassador. Her high school coaches were Bob and Martha Todd. Kelsey, the daughter of Debbie and Jeff Smith, is planning on majoring in Graphic Design at the Mount.
