4/18/08     Lions complete stellar season under first-year Head Coach Casey Stouffer

The Mount’s 2007-08 season had many highlights, both personal and team, during the recently completed season under first-year Head Coach Casey Stouffer. Some of those records include:

4/7/08     Mount wrestling Head Coach Casey Stouffer places third at the Northeast Olympic Trials Qualifier

Lions' Head Coach Casey Stouffer went 3-1 and finished third at the Greco-Roman Northeast Olympic Trials Qualifier on April 6. Stouffer, who wrestled in the 60 kg (132.25 lbs.) weight class, lost in the semifinals but rebounded to grab third place.

4/1/08     Lions' Head Coach Casey Stouffer to compete at Olympic Trials Qualifier 

College ofMount St. Joseph Wrestling Head Coach Casey Stouffer
will be competing at the Greco-Roman Northeast Olympic Trials Qualifier on Sunday, April 6 in Brockport, NY. He will be competing in the 60 kg (132.25 lbs.) weight class. The winner of each weight class qualifies to the 2008 Olympic Trials in Las Vegas, NV. Stouffer won the tournament in 2002 which qualified him for the 2002 World Team Trials where he had a sixth place finish.

3/8/08       Elliott Spence records runner-up placing at the National Championship Tournament

College of Mount St. Joseph junior 149-pound wrestler Elliott Spence (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) placed second on Saturday night at the NCAA Division III National Championship in Cedar Rapids, IA. This is the highest national finish for the Lions' junior, after receiving All-American status the past two seasons by placing eighth in the 157-pound class at the national championships.

Spence, seeded third in the tournament, lost by a 8-2 decision in the championship match to top-seeded Jacob Naig of Wartburg College. Naig led 3-0 after the first period and 5-0 after the second period, before going up 6-0  against Spence in the third period. Spence got on the scoreboard with 50 seconds remaining in the match, scoring a two-point takedown, before falling 8-2. Naig finished the season 42-3.

By finishing in the top eight, Spence achieves his third All-American award. The runner-up placing by Spence at the national tournament is the highest finish by a Mount athlete or team ever.

Spence, who finished the season with a 43-6 mark, advance to the championship match by defeating Ithaca's Blaine Woszcak, 13-10, Merchant Marine's Dan Twito, 4-2, and Augsburg's Willy Holst, the second seed in the semifinals, 9-3.  Elliot Spence

3/5/08       Junior Elliott Spence named HCAC Player of the Month 

College of Mount St. Joseph junior Elliott Spence (Cincinnati, OH/Elder), who had a perfect 12-0 record and led the Lions to a first place HCAC Wrestling Championship, has been named HCAC Player of the Month.

Spence earned first place honors in his 149-pound weight class in all four invitationals he wrestled in. He was named All-HCAC and earned HCAC Wrestler of the Year honors for his efforts at the HCAC Tournament and finished a perfect 3-0 to win his class at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional.

Spence has yet to lose to a Division III opponent this season and will be going for a National Championship at the NCAA Division III national meet in Cedar Rapids, Iowa March 7-8.

He will enter the National Championship ranked third in the country at the 149-pound division and will look for his third straight All-American honor.

Spence is the second Mount athlete to be named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Month and the first male athlete from MSJ to earn the honor. He is also the second wrestler to ever receive the award.

The HCAC Player of the Month award is in its third year of existence. The award is voted on by the sports information directors of each member institution.

2/23/08     Lions finish fifth at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Tournament; Elliott Spence places first in the 149-pound division and advances to his third straight National Tournament

149-pounder Elliott Spence (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) went 3-0 in the 149-pound division today of the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Tournament and will represent the Mount for the third straight season at next weekend's National Tournament. Spence has placed eighth in each of the last two National Tournaments.

The Mount finished fifth in the team standings today, after a fourth place finish last season. Two other Mount wrestlers came in second in their respective weight classes; 133-pounder Eric Meyer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) and 197-pounder Pat Truster (Oxford, OH/Talawanda). Meyer and Truster each went 3-1.

The NCAA Division III National will take place on March 7-8 at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, IA.  

2/15/08     Lions claim HCAC Duals Tournament victory with wins over Rose-Hulman and Manchester

The Mount won tonight's HCAC Duals Tournament at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, with a 28-22 win over Manchester and a 37-12 victory against Rose-Hulman. Mount Head Coach Casey Stouffer won HCAC Coach of the Year while junior Elliott Spence (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) was named HCAC Wrestler of the Year. Spence won both of his matches today, including one by pin, in the 149-pound weight class. He was also named to the All-Conference team.

Spence was ranked third in his weight class in the Feb. 13 BRUTE - ADIDAS National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Individual Rankings.

Manchester was 1-1 while Rose-Hulman was 0-2 in the team standings.

Other Mount wrestlers who went 2-0 today and were named to the All-HCAC team were, 133-pound Eric Meyer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills), 174-pounder Heath Lukacs (West Alexandria, OH/Dixie), 184-pounder Chad Craft (West Alexandria, OH/Dixie), and 197-pounder Pat Truster (Oxford, OH/Talawanda)

The Lions return to action on Feb. 23 when they travel to Wabash College for the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Tournament.

2/11/08     Eric Meyer wins HCAC Wrestler of the Week award 

The College of Mount St. Joseph’s Eric Meyer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills), who posted a 3-0 record and claimed first place in the 133-pound weight class at the Midstates Conference Championships, has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week for the second time this season.

The sophomore won all three of his matches by pin, defeating Manchester’s Ben Scalise, Olivet’s Blake Gardner, and Tri-State’s Thomas Pompei on his way to the championship. Meyer is 35-5 this season. The Mount finished second in the team standings behind Olivet.


2/9/08     Mount records second place finish at the Midstates Conference Championships

The Lions had two champions and three second place finishers today as they finished second in the team standings of the Midstates Conference Championships at Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute, IN. Olivet College won the team championship with 162.5 points while the Mount had 141 points. Tri-State was third with 115.5 points. The Mount was fourth at Midstates last season.

The Mount resumes action on Feb. 15 at the HCAC Tournament Duals, held at Rose-Hulman.

Eric Meyer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) was first in the 133-pound division at Midstates while teammate Elliott Spence (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) was first in 149-pound division, as each went undefeated at 3-0.

First-year Mount Head Coach Casey Stouffer was voted Midstates Conference Coach of the Year while Spence was selected Midstates Conference Co-Wrestler of the Year. Meyer was named to the Midstates All-Academic Team.

2/4/08         Elliott Spence wins his third HCAC Wrestler of the Week honor this season

The College of Mount St. Joseph’s Elliott Spence (Cincinnati, OH/Elder), who posted a 4-0 record and claimed first place in the 149-pound weight class at the Pete Willson Wheaton College Invitational, has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week for the third time this season.

The junior helped the Lions finish in seventh place in the team standings and improved his season record to 33-5.

2/2/08         Mount places seventh at the Pete Willson Wheaton College Invitational

The College of Mount St. Joseph wrestling team placed seventh today, among 27 schools, at the Pete Willson Wheaton College Invitational. The Lions recorded 67 points as UW LaCrosse and UW Parkside came in first and second respectively. The Mount returns to action at the Feb. 9 Mid-States Championship in Terre Haute, IN.

Elliott Spence(Cincinnati, OH/Elder) led the way at Wheaton with a 4-0 mark and first place in the 149-pound weight class. Eric Meyer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills), 133-pounds, went 4-1 for second place and Pat Truster (Oxford, OH/Talawanda), 197-pounds, was 6-1 and came in third place.

1/28/08      Lions' wrestler Chad Craft wins HCAC weeky honor

The College of Mount St. Joseph’s Chad Craft (West Alexandria, OH/Dixie), who posted a 5-0 record over the week to help the Lions to a 3-2 dual record, has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week.

The junior 184-pound wrestler was one of only three Mount wrestlers to win against NAIA No. 2 ranked Campbellsville University last week.

Craft finished 4-0 in the Monon Bell Duals, as the Lions were 3-1 as a team. The junior won his four matches at the Monon Bell via two pins, a major decision, and an 8-3 decision.

1/26/08         Mount goes 3-1 at the Monon Bell Duals

The College of Mount St. Joseph won three of four matches today at the Monon Bell Duals, as Chad Craft (West Alexandria, OH/Dixie) and teammate Eric Meyer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) each went 4-0.
The Lions defeated Manchester 35-15, Lincoln University 26-19 and Wabash College 23-21 and fell to Muskegon College, 34-10. Muskegon won the team competition.

The Mount is now 11-5-1 on the season with all five losses coming to top 20 teams in their division, with the exception of Purdue University in the Big Ten. The Lions have only one loss to a Division III school - #2 University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

1/22/08     Lions fall by a 31-9 score to #2 NAIA-ranked Campbellsville University

NAIA second-ranked Campbellsville University defeated the Mount tonight on Senior Night the Harrington Center, 31-9. The Lions return to action on Jan. 26 when they compete at the Monon Bell Classic.

133-pounder Eric Meyer ( Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills), 149-pounder Elliott Spence (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) and 184-pounder Chad Craft ( West Alexandria, OH/Dixie) each claimed wins for the Mount against the Tigers.

1/14/08     Eric Meyer claims HCAC Wrestler of the Week honor 

The Mount’s Eric Meyer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills), who went 2-0 in his weight class and claimed first place at the Washington and Lee Invitational, has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week .  The sophomore wrestler won by a near fall and a 7-0 decision to place first in the 133-pound weight class.

As a team, the Mount claimed first place in the seven school event. MSJ posted 94.5 points to hold off runner-up Washington & Jefferson who had 71 points. Meyer is 23-4 on the season and has only one loss to a Division III opponent this season.

1/12/08     Lions win Washington & Lee University Invitational

Four different Mount wrestlers claimed first place in their weight classes as the Lions won the team title today at the Washington & Lee University Invitational. The Mount outdistanced number two Washington & Jefferson and third place Muhlenberg for the team title. Ten teams in all garnered points in the invitational. The Lions return to action on Jan. 22 when they host NAIA Campbellsville University at 6 p.m.

Steve Austin (Franklin, OH/Carlisle) won the 125-pound division while teammates Eric Meyer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills), 133; Elliott Spence (Cincinnati, OH/Elder), 149; and Chad Craft (Wes Alexandria, OH/Dixie), 184, all placed first. Spence was also voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler.

1/7/08     Elliott Spence claims his second straight HCAC Wrestler of the Week honor 

1/5/08     Lions finish in an 11th place tie at the Midwest Classic Tournament

The Mount recorded an 11th place tie this past weekend at the Midwest Classic Tournament in Indianapolis. Elliott Spence (Cincinnati, OHElder) led the way with a 3-1 mark and a second place finish. The Lions had three others placers, Pat Truster (Oxford, OH/Talawanda), sixth place in the 197-pound division; Steve Austin (Franklin, OH/Carlisle), seventh place in the 125-pound division; and Eric Meyer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills), eighth place in the 133-pound division.

The Lions are back on the mats this Saturday at the Washington & Lee University Invitational.

The Mount’s Elliott Spence (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) went 3-1 at the Midwest Classic hosted by the Universityof Indianapolis and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week for the second time. The junior earned a second place finish in the 149-pound division as the Lions finished tied for 11th in the team standings. Spence won two of his matches by pinning his opponents.

He leads the Mount in wins this season with a 26-5 record and was ranked third in the latest NCAA Division III NWCA national rankings in the 149-pound division.

12/17/07     Mount junior wrestler Elliott Spence wins HCAC weekly honor 

College of Mount St. Joseph’s Elliott Spence (Cincinnati, OH/Elder), who went 5-0 at the Ohio Northern University Tournament, has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week. The junior earned the title in the 149-pound division as the Lions finished in a tie for 11th place in the team standings. Spence defeated the sixth and seventh seeds and then defeated the fourth seed from Olivet College in the final, 7-3.

On Sunday, Spence dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision to Division I Purdue University’s Kevin Lipp. MSJ lost to the Boilermakers, 39-3 in the dual match. The Cincinnati native leads the Lions this season with a 19-4 record. The Mount will wrestle at the Ashland (OH) Quad December 18 before a dual meet with Ohio Northern December 21.

Lions complete a busy weekend by finishing in a tie for 11th place at the ONU Invitational and a dual match at Division I Purdue University

Elliott Spence (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) went 5-0 in the 149-pound division to claim first place at the Ohio Northern University Invitational on Dec. 15. The Mount fiinshed in a tie for 11th place in the team standings. They wrestled at Purdue University on Dec. 16, losing to the DI Boliermakers, 39-3.

The Mount returns to action on Dec. 18 at the Ashland University Quad.

Three other Mount wrestlers placed at the invitational. They were Chad Craft (West Alexandria, OH/Dixie), who was 5-1 and fifth in the 184-pound division; Steve Austin (Franklin, OH/Carlisle), 4-2 and seventh in the 125-pound division; and Pat Truster (Oxford, OH/Talawanda), 3-3 and eighth in the 197-pound division.

Eric Meyer ( Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) claimed the Mount's lone win against Purdue, with a 6-3 overtime win in the 133-pound division. Spence lost by a 4-3 score at 149.
The Mount went 2-1 today the Ashland University Quad, defeating Mount Union 39-8, and Seton Hill 34-12, and losing to host Ashland 31-10. The Lions return to action on Dec. 21 with a dual match at Ohio Northern University.

Steve Austin (Franklin, OH/Carlisle) went 3-0 in the 125 pound division today, while teammates Eric Meyer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills), 133-pound division and Elliott Spence (Cincinnati, OH/Elder), 149 and 157 turned in identical won-loss records. The Lions claimed eight individual wins against Mount Union and seven individual wins against Seton Hill. They jumped out to leads of 7-0 and 7-6 against Ashland, before the match was tied at 10-all. Ashland won the six final weight divisions.
184-pounder Chad Craft (West Alexandria, OH/Dixie) and 197-pounder Pat Truster (Oxford, OH/Talawanda) recorded pins tonight as the Lions won at Ohio Northern University, 26-14. The Mount won six of 10 individual matches, including two by major decision. Elliott Spence (Cincinnati, OH/Elder), ranked third in the 149-pound division of the latest NWCA Division III Brute-Adidas Individual Rankings, won his match tonight in the 165-pound division by a 14-8 score.

The Mount returns to action in the Jan. 4-5 Midwest Classic.

12/16/07       Lions complete a busy weekend by finishing in a tie for 11th place at the ONU Invitational and a dual match at Division I Purdue University

12/8/07     Lions in action at the Little State Tournament 

The Lions turned in a fine all-around performance this past weekend at the Little State Tournament in Indianapolis, IN. Eric Meyer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) claimed first place ion the 133-pound division, finishing with a 3-0 mark while teammate Elliott Spence (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) was second in the 149-pound division.

Jakob Porter (Cincinnatil, OH/Glen Este) won the “Most Falls” award, recording three pins with the fastest time of 29 seconds, wrestling in the 157-pound division. Chad Craft (West Alexandria, OH/Dixie) was second in the 184-pound division. The Mount had eight placers in all.

The Mount returns to the mats on Dec. 15 when they compete in the Ohio Northern University Invitational.

Mount registers a 3-1 record at the Olivet College Duals

The College of Mount St. Joseph wrestling team was in action at the Olivet College Duals today, winning three of four matches. The Lions defeated Grand Valley State University, 20-18, Rose-Hulman, 40-15 and 26th-ranked Ohio Northern University, 18-16. The Mount's only loss was by a 31-6 margin to third-ranked University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse.

Elliott Spence (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) went 4-0 today while teammates Eric Meyer ( Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) and Tom Griffin (Carmel, IN/Carmel) each turned in 3-1 records.

The Mount returns to action on Dec. 7 at the two-day Little State Tournament in Indianapolis, IN. 

11/10/07     Lions record a 2-0-1 record in duals action at Baldwin-Wallace College including tie against 17th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace

The Mount was in action today at the Baldwin-Wallace College Duals, recording two wins and a tie. The Mount defeated Case Western Reserve University, 37-12 and Waynesburg (PA) College, 47-11, and tied host Baldwin-Wallace, 21-all. BW was the nation's 17th-ranked team.

The Lions return to action on Nov. 17 at the Olivet College Duals.

Elliott Spence (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) turned in a 3-0 mark during the day as did teammates Chad Craft (West Alexandria, OH/Dixie) and Eric Meyer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills). Six other Mount wrestlers recorded two wins each.

 

11/07/07     Mount begins 2007 season at the Eastern Michigan University Open

The College of Mount St. Joseph began the 2007 season today at the Eastern Michigan University Open.

Eric Meyer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) finished eight today at 133 lbs. by going 4-2. He had wins over EMU’s Vince Licari, Lindenwood’s Mitch Trahan, Purdue’s Jake Fleckenstein, and Pitt’s Jim Conroy. He lost to Central Michigan’s Jeff Shutich and Northwestern’s Eric Metzer.

 

Elliott Spence(Cincinnati, OH/Elder) also went 4-2 at 157 lbs. by defeating Central Michigan’s James Puckett, EMU’s Teddy Amundson, Northwestern’s Robert Kellogg, and EMU’s Cory Mancuso. His loses went to Lindenwood’s Mike O’Hara and Purdue’s Sam Patacsil.

 

Steve Austin(Franklin, OH/Carlisle) went 2-0 at 125 lbs. until dropping out of the tournament due to an injury. Austin defeated Ohio State’s Patrick Zamaria and Olivet’s Kyle Labrecque.

 

Other Mount wrestlers capturing wins at the EMU Open were 141-pounder Dave Harris (Cincinnati, OH/Roger Bacon), 149-pounder Josh Sasfy (Reynoldsburg, OH/Reynoldsburg), and 174-pounder Trent Hammer (Newark, OH/Lakewood).

 

The Mount travels to Baldwin-Wallace on Nov. 10 and will dual Case-Western and #17 Baldwin-Wallace. 

7/9/07    First-year Head Coach Casey Stouffer releases 2007-08 wrestling schedule

A first-ever dual against a NCAA Division I opponent highlights the College of Mount St. Joseph's 2007-08 wrestling schedule. Head Coach Casey Stouffer and his Lions will travel to West Lafayette, IN on Dec. 16 to take on Division I schools Purdue University and North Dakota State University at the Purdue University Duals. The Mount will also face NAIA Oklahoma City University at Purdue.

Purdue University has committed to come to the Mount during the 2008-09 season, according to Stouffer. The Lions open the 2007-08 season on Nov. 3 when they travel to the Eastern Michigan University Open in Ypsilanti, MI.

5/22/07     Mount hires Lions alum and former wrestler Casey Stouffer as head coach

The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that Casey Stouffer has been hired to be the school’s head wrestling coach and athletic facilities coordinator. Stouffer, a 2001 Mount graduate and former Lions’ wrestler, takes over the Lions’ program from Thomas Wynn, who was at the school for six seasons. Stouffer is the fourth head coach in the program’s history, following Ron Corradini Sr., Rod Huber, and Wynn. Stouffer has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Health/Physical Education. He is also working on a Masters in Education Administration degree and has Colorado teacher certification in Health/Physical Education (K-12).

The Lions’ new coach is a native of Wabash, Indiana and is a graduate of Southwood (Indiana) High School.  

Stouffer, who wrestled for Huber for four seasons, was a letter-winner in the sport each of the four years, and was a three-time team captain. He also played on the Mount’s tennis team for one season. While at the Mount, Stouffer was a member of FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), the founder of Huddle at MSJ, and was affiliated with the Mount Education Association and NEA (National Education Association). Stouffer also made Dean’s List at the Mount three times and was a NCAA Division III Scholar Athlete All-American (1999, 2000, and 2001).

After graduation from the Mount, Stouffer trained at the Olympic Wrestling Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, was a world champion in Folkstyle wrestling (2002), an Ironman world wrestling champion (2002) and placed sixth at the Greco-Roman World Team Trials (2002).

Stouffer was a Coach/Counselor at the FCA Wrestling Camp and Ohio State University Wrestling Camp (1999), as well as being a retreat counselor for four years for Fellowship Christian Athletes. He was a teacher and head coach at Amelia High School (2002) before moving to Colorado Spring, Colorado. During his time in Colorado, Stouffer has been a Physical Education teacher at Colorado Springs Christian School and a Health/Physical Education teacher at Lewis Palmer High School for four years. He was the varsity head wrestling coach at Lewis Palmer High School for the past four seasons. 

Coach Stouffer, and his wife, Jessica, will reside in Cincinnati, Ohio. 

 

2/4/08     Elliott Spence wins his third HCAC Wrestler of the Week honor this season 

The College of Mount St. Joseph’s Elliott Spence (Cincinnati, OH/Elder), who posted a 4-0 record and claimed first place in the 149-pound weight class at the Pete Willson Wheaton College Invitational, has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week for the third time this season. 

The junior helped the Lions finish in seventh place in the team standings and improved his season record to 33-5. 

2/2/08     Mount places seventh at the Pete Willson Wheaton College Invitational

The College of Mount St. Joseph wrestling team placed seventh today, among 27 schools, at the Pete Willson Wheaton College Invitational. The Lions recorded 67 points as UW LaCrosse and UW Parkside came in first and second respectively. The Mount returns to action at the Feb. 9 Mid-States Championship in Terre Haute, IN.

Elliott Spence(Cincinnati, OH/Elder) led the way at Wheaton with a 4-0 mark and first place in the 149-pound weight class. Eric Meyer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills), 133-pounds, went 4-1 for second place and Pat Truster (Oxford, OH/Talawanda), 197-pounds, was 6-1 and came in third place.

1/28/08     Lions' wrestler Chad Craft wins HCAC weeky honor 

The College of Mount St. Joseph’s Chad Craft (West Alexandria, OH/Dixie), who posted a 5-0 record over the week to help the Lions to a 3-2 dual record, has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week. 

The junior 184-pound wrestler was one of only three Mount wrestlers to win against NAIA No. 2 ranked Campbellsville University last week. 

Craft finished 4-0 in the Monon Bell Duals, as the Lions were 3-1 as a team.  The junior won his four matches at the Monon Bell via two pins, a major decision, and an 8-3 decision.

1/26/08     Mount goes 3-1 at the Monon Bell Duals

The College of Mount St. Joseph won three of four matches today at the Monon Bell Duals, as Chad Craft (West Alexandria, OH/Dixie) and teammate Eric Meyer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) each went 4-0.
The Lions defeated Manchester 35-15, Lincoln University 26-19 and Wabash College 23-21 and fell to Muskegon College, 34-10. Muskegon won the team competition.

The Mount is now 11-5-1 on the season with all five losses coming to top 20 teams in their division, with the exception of Purdue University in the Big Ten. The Lions have only one loss to a Division III school - #2 University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
