3/4/08       Four Lions' players honored for 2007-2008 play

Sophomore forward Michael Romes (Villa Hills, KY/Beechwood) has been named First Team All-HCAC while three teammates have been awarded Honorable Mention All-Conference status by HCAC coaches.

Romes, who led the Mount in points and was in the top 10 of many statistical categories this season in the conference, garnered his second straight First Team All-Conference. He also claimed the Freshman of the Year award for 2006-2007.

Senior forward Michael Eirons (Huron, OH/Huron), senior guard Josh Carter (Sidney, OH/Anna Local) and Mitchell Goldschmidt (Ft. Loramie, OH/Ft. Loramie) were each named Honorable Mention All-HCAC. Eirons was also named Honorabe Mention All-Conference last season.

2/28/08     Mount's 2008-09 schedule released

The Lions will open the 2008-09 season on Nov. 18 with a home game against Wilmington College. The Mount will host their annual Tip-Off Tournament on Nov. 21-22, with opponents to be determined. The Lions begin HCAC play on Dec. 3 when they play at Anderson University.

2/23/08     Lions lose season-ending game at home to Franklin College, 89-71

The Mount closed the 2007-08 season today with an 89-71 home loss on Senior Day to Franklin College. The Lions finish the season with a 9-16 overall record, 3-13 in the HCAC. Franklin goes to 16-9, 10-6.

The Grizzlies jumped out to a 48-32 lead at the half, and fired in 14-of-23 three-pointers in the game, en route to the HCAC win. Michael Romes (Villa Hills, KY/Beechwood) led both teams with 22 points.

Seniors Michael Eirons (Huron, OH/Huron) and Josh Carter (Anna Local/Sidney, OH) finished their Lions' careers today. Eirons had 18 points and six rebounds while Carter dished out a game-high six assists, to finish the season with 102 assists, a new Mount single-season record.

2/20/08     Mount falls by a 75-67 margin at home to Bluffton University

Visiting Bluffton University jumped out to a 39-33 lead tonight and held on to post a 75-67 win against the Mount. The Lions are now 9-15 overall, 3-12 in the HCAC while Bluffton goes to 13-11, 7-8. The  Mount finishes regular season play on Feb. 23 when they host Franklin College at 3 p.m. on Senior Day.

Michael Romes (Villa Hills, KY/Beechwood) led the Lions with 16 points while Michael Eirons (Huron, OH/Huron) had 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds. The Mount out-rebounded the Beavers 38-34 but had 20 turnovers to Bluffton's 15 miscues.

2/13/08     Transylvania records come-from-behind win over the Mount, 77-73

Host Transylvania came from nine points behind at the half and a second half deficit of 12 points tonight to register a 77-73 win against the Mount. The Lions are now 9-14 overall, 3-11 in the HCAC while Transy goes to 14-8, 9-4. The Mount returns to action on Feb. 20 when they host HCAC-foe Bluffton at 7:30 p.m.

The Lions shot 58 percent in the first 20 minutes of play tonight to take a 35-26 lead at the intermission, and led by a 52-40 advantage with 11:30 left in the game. Michael Eirons (Huron, OH/Huron) fired in 15 points in the first half. The Pioneers grabbed the lead at 54-52 with 8:48 left in the game, thanks to a couple of missed three-pointers by the Mount and some solid outside shooting of their own. Mitchell Goldschmidt (Ft. Loramie, OH/Ft. Loramie) connected on a three-pointer with 11 seconds left, to pull the Lions to within three, 76-73, but the Mount would get no closer. Transylvania converted one-of-two free throw with five seconds left, and the Lions' missed a three pointer with one second remaining, for the final margin.

Eirons finished with a game-high 22 points and a team-high seven rebounds while Michael Romes (Villa Hills, KY/Beechwood) had 14 points. Both teams shot 49 percent from the field while the Mount won the battle of the boards, 30-26. Transy was 19-of-27 from the line to the Lions' 10-of-15 from the charity stripe.

2/9/08     Mount drops a 78-72 decision at Franklin College

The Lions fell behind by 13 points at the half today and closed to within three points late in the second half but fell at Franklin College, 78-72. The Mount is now 9-13 overall, 3-10 in the HCAC while Franklin improves to 13-8, 7-5. The Lions are in eighth place in the conference, three games out of the sixth and final conference post-season position, with three HCAC games remaining.

The Mount was out-shot and out-rebounded in the first 20 minutes by the Grizzlies today, and for most of the second half trailed by double-digits but whittled the deficit down to under 10 with 6:03 left in the game. Mitchell Goldschmidt (Ft. Loramie, OH/Ft. Loramie) and Josh Carter (Sidney, OH/Anna Local) helped key a late run that helped the Mount cut the deficit to 68-65 with 2:10 left but the Lions could get no closer. Franklin hit eight-of-12 free throws over the last 51 seconds to seal the game.

Michael Romes (Villa Hills, KY/Beechwood) had a game-high 20 points while teammate Michael Eirons (Huron, OH/Huron) chipped in 19 points and a team-high nine rebounds. The Lions shot 62 percent in the second half.

2/6/08     Lions fall at conference-foe Rose-Hulman, 77-67

The Mount slipped to three games back in the hunt for an HCAC Tournament qualification, with four conference games to play, as they lost tonight at Rose-Hulman, 77-67. The Lions are now 9-12 overall, 3-9 in the HCAC while Rose-Hulman goes to 10-11, 6-6.

The Lions return to action on Feb. 9 when they play at Franklin College.

Rose-Hulman jumped out to a 33-28 lead at the half, thanks to connecting on 57 percent from the field - to the Lions 45 percent. The Mount stayed in the game in the first half thanks to converting 9-of-12 free throws. In the second half, the Engineers took their lead out to 10 points early on, only to see the Lions whittle down the deficit to five, at 48-43, with 11:52 left in the game. Rose-Hulman led by a 60-55 score with 3:06 left in the game and went on a 9-0 run over the next 1:31 to go up by a 69-55 and put the game away.

Mitchell Goldschmidt (Ft. Loramie, Oh/Ft. Loramie) had a game-high 22 points while Michael Romes (Villa Hills, Ky/Beechwood) had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Travis Huffman (Hebron, Ky/Conner) chipped in 17 points.  

2/2/08    Mount records conference upset win over first place Defiance College, 70-63

The College of Mount St. Joseph rallied late in the second half to a 70-63 victory over Defiance College today at home in the Harrington Center. The Lions improve to 9-11 overall and 3-8 in the conference. The loss drops Defiance to 14-6 overall and a 9-2 conference record. The next game for the Lions is February 6 at Rose-Hulman.

The Lion’s led 38-32 at the half after a very impressive opening half in which they shot 50% from the field including from three-point range. Defiance rallied in the second half, however, tying the game two and a half minutes into the half at 38-all. The score remained tight after that, with Defiance holding a slim lead. A three-pointer from Chris Cioffi (Covington, KY/Scott) with 5:46 left tied the game at 56-all. The Mount was able to take the lead after that and used their defense to pull away in the final minute to a seven-point win.

Michael Romes (Villa Hills, KY/Beechwood) led the team in scoring with 18 points while Shawn Finamore (Cincinnati, OH/Deer Park) scored a total of 11 and went 3-3 from three-point range. Michael Eirons (Huron, OH/Huron) contributed 10 points and a team-high total of eight rebounds.

1/30/08    Hanover sweeps Mount in season series with an 85-63 home victory

The Lions lost tonight in conference action against Hanover, 85-63. The Mount fall to 8-11 overall and 2-8 in conference play. Hanover improves to 10-9 overall and 6-4 in conference play. The next game for the Lions is February 2 at home against Defiance College.

The Lions cold shooting — 38 percent - put them down 48-31 at halftime. The 17-point deficit proved to be too much in the second half and the Mount fell for the second time of the season to the third place Hanover team by a total of 22 points.

Leading the Lions in scoring was Michael Eirons (Huron, OH/Huron) with a total of 17 followed by Mitchell Goldschmidt (Ft. Loramie, OH/Ft. Loramie) with 15. Travis Huffman (Hebron, KY/Conner) and Michael Romes (Villa Hills, KY/Beechwood) both contributed a total of 11 points each. 1/19/08 Mount wins in conference play against Manchester, 65-63

The College of Mount St. Joseph Lions was able to win a thriller against Manchester College 65-63 tonight at the Harrington Center. The Lions evened their record at 8-8 overall and 2-5 in conference play. Manchester falls to 3-13 overall and 1-6 in conference play. The Mount’s next game is Jan. 23 at home against Transylvania.

The Lions had a hard-fought game against Manchester and the score remained close throughout the first half, trailing by three at the half, 33-30. Play once again stayed tight in the second with the score tied 63-63 with 1:17 left in the game. Michael Eirons (Huron, OH/Huron) was able to steal the ball with 20 seconds left and score the game winning lay-up with only six seconds remaining in the game. A last second lay-up by Manchester came just after time expired. Michael Romes (Villa Hills, KY/Beechwood) led the Lions in scoring with 17 points followed by Eirons with 16 points and Mitchell Goldschmidt (Ft. Loramie, OH/Ft. Loramie), who added double figures with 11 points.

1/16/08 Mount falls in conference play at Bluffton, 73-72

The Mount lost tonight for the fifth time in conference play, falling to the Bluffton Beavers, 73-72. The Mount falls to 7-8 overall and 1-5 in conference play. Bluffton improves to 11-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play. The Lions next face Manchester College at home at the Harrington Center on Jan. 19.

Despite holding an eleven-point lead at the end of the first, the Mount lost in heart-breaking fashion against the Beavers; allowing Bluffton to come back in the final minute to take the lead 71-68 on two successful free-throw attempts. While the Mount was able to tie the game with 39 seconds left, 71-71, on a three-pointer by Mitchell Goldschmidt (Ft. Loramie, OH/Ft. Loramie), another foul on the Lions allowed the Beavers to connect on two more free-throws to put them up for good 73-71. Two turnovers by the Lions in the final few seconds assured Bluffton the victory. The Lions had four players scoring in double figures, led by Michael Eirons (Huron, OH/Huron) with 17 points.

1/9/08 Mount earns first conference win of the season against Rose-Hulman of Institute of Technology, 75-62

The Mount evened their record and recorded a crucial conference win against Rose-Hulman tonight at the Harrington Center, 75-62. The Lions improve to 7-7 overall and 1-4 in the conference while the Rose-Hulman Engineers fall to 4-9 overall and 1-4 in the conference. The Lions next face Bluffton University at Bluffton on Wednesday, January 16.

The Lions tough play in the first half kept the score close with several lead changes. Holding a three-point lead at the half, the Lions were able to open up the game mid-way through the second half and charge to a 13-point win. The Lions had a definite advantage at the free throw line, going 17-for-23 opposed to Rose Hulman’s 5-of-7 showing. Three players scoring in double figures for Lions as Josh Carter (Sidney, OH/Anna Local) led the way with 21 points. Carter also went 9-for-9 from the free-throw line. Michael Eirons (Huron, OH/Huron) also contributed 17 points.

1/5/08 Lions fall in HCAC action at Defiance College, 88-64

Host Defiance College shot 66 percent in the second half, and converted 17 Mount turnovers into 27 points in the game as they opened up a close game early in the second half en route to an 88-64 win today. The Mount is now 6-7 overall, 0-4 in the HCAC while the Yellow Jackets go to 9-4, 4-0. The Lions return to action on Jan. 9 when they host HCAC-foe Rose-Hulman at 7:30 p.m.

The two teams played competitive baskeball in the first few minutes of the game, until Defiance opened up a 23-8 lead with 10:30 left in the first half. The Mount, however, whittled that lead down to six points, 34-28, thanks mainly to the play of Michael Romes (Villa Hills, KY/Beechwood) and Travis Huffman (Hebron, KY/Conner), just before the half and went into the locker room at the break trailing 37-28.

Defiance then took control of the game, going on a 17-5 run to start the second half, down to the 15:08 mark, and led 54-33. The Lions would never get the deficit back to under double digits as they remained winless in the HCAC this season.

Michael Eirons (Huron, OH/Huron) and Huffman each had a game-high tying 17 points while Romes added 15 points and a game-high tying six rebounds. DC out-shot the Mount, 60 to 48 percent from the field, and out-rebounded the Mount, 31-23. The Yellow Jackets were 13-of-24 from behind the three-point arc while the Lions were four-for-13 from the same distance.

1/3/08 Mount pulls out victory versus Adrian College, 74-72

The Mount evened their record at 6-6 tonight by defeating Adrian College, 74-72 in the Harrington Center. Adrian College falls to 5-5. The Lions next face Defiance College at Defiance, Ohio on Saturday, January 5.

Despite the Adrian College Bulldogs leading for most of the game, the Lions were able to pull out the win the final few moments. Trailing by 15 points with 9:11 remaining, the Lions staged a comeback late in the second half. Two free throws from Josh Carter (Sidney, OH/Anna Local) with less than two minutes remaining gave the Mount their first lead since early in the first half. Carter also put the Lions up for good 73-72 with 1:02 remaining. The Lions scoring was led by Michael Eirons (Huron, OH/Huron) with 20 points and while Carter and Michael Romes (Villa Hills, KY/Beechwood) each contributed 15.

12/30/07 Mount falls by a 76-72 score to DePauw University in the Championship game of the Tampa Shootout

The Lions made a furious comeback attempt today but fell just short, losing to DePauw University, 76-72 in the Championship game of the Tampa Shootout. The Lions are now 5-6 while DePauw improves to 8-2. The Mount returns to action on Jan. 3 when they host Adrian College at 7:30 p.m.

The first half action today saw the two teams record five ties and five lead changes, with DePauw leading at the intermission, 37-32. The Tigers built their lead to eight points, twice, last the last at 10:49 of the second half and held a 68-58 lead with 3:42 remaining before the Lions made their comeback attempt. The Mount got balanced scoring, from both inside and outside, and went on a 12-4 run over the next three minutes to cut the deficit to 72-70 with 43 seconds left. DePauw, however, sewed up the championship win by hitting four-of-six free throws in the final 41 seconds while the Mount went zero-for-three from the floor (including two missed three-pointers).

Michael Romes (Villa Hills, KY/Beechwood) tossed in a game-high 23 points for the Mount and was named to the All-Tournament team. Mitchell Goldschmidt (Ft. Loramie, OH/Ft. Loramie) added 14 points while teammate Michael Eirons (Huron, OH/Huron) chipped in 11 points. Romes and Eirons grabbed five rebounds each.

The Lions out-shot DePauw, 46 to 44 percent from the field but were out-rebounded 41-29, including 12-5 on the offensive boards. DePauw was 19-of-28 from the free throw line to the Mount's nine-of-11 from the charity stripe.

12/29/07 Lions record 68-59 win against Colby-Sawyer College in the Tampa Shootout

In their first action in 11 days, the Mount grabbed a one-point lead at the half and went on to post a 68-59 win tonight against Colby-Sawyer College in the Tampa Shootout. The Lions, now 5-5, will play against DePauw University (7-2) on Dec. 30 in the Tampa Shootout Championship game. DePauw was a first-game winner in the tournament over Case Western Reserve University, 74-73.

Mount leading scorer Michael Romes (Villa Hills, KY/Beechwood) got off to a slow start tonight, scoring only two points in the first half but generated a strong second half, shooting 7-of-8 from the floor in the final 20 minutes of play to finish with a game-high 21 points, and chipped in a team-high seven rebounds. Neither team shot well in the first half, as both connected in the low 30 percent from the floor in the opening half. The Lions picked that up in the second half, holding onto the lead the entire second half, including a 10-point margin (58-48) after a Romes' free throw with just under five minutes left in the game.

The Lions were 21-of-35 from the game from the charity stripe while Colby-Sawyer finished 10-of-16 from the free throw line. The two teams were nearly even in turnovers and rebounds. Shawn Finamore (Cincinnati, OH/Deer Park) chipped in 13 points while teamate Mitchell Goldschmidt (Ft. Loramie, OH/Ft. Loramie) added 12 points in the win, the Lions second straight victory. Finamore was four-of-seven from behind the three-point arc.

12/18/07 Mount cruises to an 83-68 victory Over Notre Dame (OH) College

The Lions earned their fourth victory of the season and ended a four-game losing streak with an 83-68 win tonight at the Harrington Center. The Lions improve to 4-5 while Notre Dame (OH) College falls to 4-8. Next, the Mount travels to Tampa, FL to face Colby-Sawyer College in the Tampa Shootout on December 29.

The Lions held a commanding lead for much of the game; only allowing Notre Dame College to come within six points late in the second half. By halftime, the Lions already held a hefty lead over Notre Dame College 41-24. The Mount’s scoring attack was led by Mitchell Goldschmidt (Ft. Loramie, OH/Ft. Loramie) with 23 points and an eight-for-fourteen field goal shooting from the floor. Michael Eirons (Huron, OH/Huron) also had 22 points in his 33 minutes of play. Michael Romes (Villa Hills, KY/Beechwood) contributed seven defensive rebounds and two steals on defense.

12/17/07 Mount forward Michael Romes wins HCAC Player of the Week honor

College of Mount St. Joseph sophomore forward Michael Romes (Villa Hills, KY/Beechwood), who led the Mount in an 86-74 loss at No. 21 Elmhurst College, has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week. The sophomore scored 21 points on nine of 11 shooting from the field and added five steals, a rebound, and an assist in the loss.

Romes leads the conference in field goal percentage (65.7%) and ranks second in points per game (17.9). MSJ (3-5, 0-3 HCAC) will take part in their last game before the holidays on December 18 at home against Notre Dame College (Ohio).

12/15/07 Mount falls at 21st-ranked Elmhurst College, 86-74

The Lions jumped out to a early first half lead today but could not sustain their momentum as they dropped an 86-74 game at 21st-ranked Elmhurst College, 86-74. The Mount, who has lost four straight, goes to 3-5 on the season while Elmhurst improves to 4-1. The Lions return to action on Dec. 18 when they host Notre Dame College. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
The Mount held the lead in the game until Elmhurst tied the score at 14-all with 11:05 to play. After two more ties in the first half - the last being at 25-all with 5:25 remaining - Elmhurst took over control of the game, leading 42-35 at the half. That lead would increase to 18 points by the 10-minute mark of the second half, and the Lions would get no closer than eight, 78-70, with 2:13 to play in the game.

Both teams shot well from the field, with Elmhurst connecting on 59 percent and the Mount hitting on 57 percent. Elmhurst out-rebounded the Lions 30-19. Michael Romes (Villa Hills, KY/Beechwood) had a team-high 21 points for the Mount while teammate Michael Eirons (Huron, OH/Huron) chipped in 16 points.

12/8/07 Michael Eirons tosses in 27 points but the Mount falls short at Anderson, 87-74

College of Mount St. Joseph senior Michael Eirons (Huron, OH/Huron) scored 27 points but the Mount had only one other double-figure scorer today in an 87-74 setback at HCAC-rival Anderson University. The Mount, which has lost three straight, is now 3-4 overall, 0-3 in the HCAC while Anderson improves to 3-4, 1-2.

The Mount is back in action on Dec. 15 when they play at Elmhurst College.

Anderson connected on 58 percent from the field in the first half, racing out to a 44-35 lead at the intermission. The Ravens began the game with a 12-2 outburst. They led by a 56-39 margin with 16:37 showing on the second half clock, thanks to a balanced scoring attack. The Lions then picked up the defensive pressure, cutting down the deficit to a 60-54 score with 12:59 left and 63-57 with 10:14 to play in the game, after a three-point field goal by Mitchell Goldschmidt (Ft. Loramie, OH/Ft. Loramie). Goldschmidt hit another three-pointer with 8:21 to play to bring the Lions to within four points, 68-64, but the Mount would get no closer.

The Ravens connected on 13-of-14 free throws to the Mount’s nine-of-13 from the charity stripe in the final 20 minutes of play. Both teams were 13-of-29 from the field in the second half.

Travis Huffman (Hebron, KY/Conner) tossed in 14 points off the bench. He had Eirons combined for 41 points on 16-of-20 shooting.

12/5/07 Lions lose at home to Hanover, 66-61

The Lions got off to a fast start tonight, shooting 61 percent in the first half and holding a 33-30 lead at the intermission, but could not sustain their momentum as they dropped a 66-61 decision at home to Hanover College. The Mount is now 3-3 overall, 0-2 in the HCAC while Hanover goes to 6-1, 2-0. The Lions play at Anderson on Dec. 8.

Hanover forged ahead 54-52 with 3:44 to play in the game and held on down the stretch for the win. The Mount closed the deficit to 62-61 with 25 seconds to play when Mitchell Goldschmidt (Ft. Loramie, OH/Ft. Loramie) converted a four-point play.

Michael Romes (Villa Hills, KY/ Beechwood) led the Mount with 15 points while Goldschmidt added 12 points. Michael Eirons (Huron, OH/Huron) had 11 points and seven rebounds.

12/1/07 Mount falls to Manchester, 87-85

Host Manchester College knocked down nine of its last 10 free throws today to seal an 87-85 HCAC win over the Mount. The Lions are now 3-2 overall, 0-1 in the HCAC while Manchester goes to 3-4, 1-0. The Mount is back in action on Dec. 5 when they host HCAC-rival Hanover College. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.

The Lions led 40-35 today at the half, thanks to shooting 54 percent from the field, and had a 67-60 lead with 6:28 to play before Manchester made a move and tied the game at 69-all with 4:01 left. The Spartans went ahead with 3:53 to play, 71-69 and held the advantage down the stretch until the Mount's Michael Romes (Villa Hills, KY/Beechwood) hit a shot with 1:06 remaining to give his team an 81-80 lead. Manchester's Jake Koziel connected on two free throws with 52 seconds left to give the Spartans an 82-81 lead and Manchester connected on five more free throws over the next 44 seconds to jump out to a 87-83 advantage. Romes hit a shot with one second left to make the final margin, 87-85.

Romes led all scorers with 25 points while Michael Eirons (Huron, OH/Huron) tossed in 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Mitchell Goldschmidt (Ft. Loramie, OH/Ft. Loramie) chipped in 15 points. The Mount out-shot Manchester, 53 to 49 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Spartans, 31-22. The Lions committed 21 turnovers to Manchester's 14 turnovers. Manchester hit 28-of-31 free throws to the Mount's 18-of-21 from the charity stripe.

11/24/07 Lions post third win in four games with an 83-64 home win over Thomas More College

Mitchell Goldschmidt (Ft . Loramie, OH/Ft. Loramie) tossed in 10 points in the first half, helping the Mount out to a 43-35 lead at the intermission en route to an 83-64 home win today over Thomas More College. The Mount is now 3-1 overall while Thomas More falls to 2-2. The Lions resume action on Nov. 28 when they play at

Goldschmidt, who finished with 13 points, was one of three Mount double-figure scorers. Michael Romes (Villa Hills, KY/Beechwood) led all scorers with 17 points, as he connected on all five of his field goal attempts (including one-of-one from behind the three-point arc) and all six of his free throw attempts. Michael Eirons (Huron, Oh/Huron) chipped in 12 points. Ten players in all scored for the Mount, who won for the ninth time in 13 meetings between the two schools.

The Lions out-rebounded the Saints, 34-27, and out-shot them, 52 to 40 percent from the field. The Mount was 28-for-40 from the free throw line while Thomas More was 18-of-31 from the charity stripe.

11/20/07 Mount drops first game of the season with a 74-63 loss at Wilmington College

Wilmington College jumped out to a 10-point lead at the half and held on tonight to post a 74-63 loss at home over the Lions. The Mount is now 2-1 on the season while Wilmington goes to 3-0. The Lions return to action on Nov. 24 when they host cross-river rival Thomas More College.

The Quakers built up a lead of 18 points in the second half before the Mount fought back to knock the score down to eight points, 69-61 with 58 seconds left. Wimington converted five-of-six free throws down the stretch to clinch the win.

Michael Romes (Villa Hills, KY/Beechwood) had game-high totals of 21 points and eight rebounds for the Mount. Michael Eirons (Huron, OH/Huron) tossed in 10 points for the Lions. The Mount was out-shot 48 to 40 percent from the field and 79 to 60 percent from the free throw line.

11/17/07 Lions claim Franklin Savings Tip-off Tournament championship win

The College of Mount St. Joseph raced out to a 53-38 lead at the half and never looked back as they won the championship game of the Franklin Savings Tip-off Tournament with a 94-80 victory against Capital University. The Mount, 2-0 on the season, will play at Wilmington College on Nov. 20.

The Lions shot 59 percent in the first half today and 62 percent in the second half, as all five starters scored in double figures. Michael Eirons (Huron, OH/Huron) led the way for the Lions against the Crusaders, firing in a team-high 20 points, and grabbing five rebounds. Mitchell Goldschmidt added 15 points and five rebounds.

The Mount opened the season the night before in the tournament, with a 116-73 win against St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) College. All 16 players that saw action for the Mount in the game scored, led by Travis Huffman (Hebron, KY/Conner), who tossed in 15 points. Four other Lions’ players were in double figures. The Mount shot a blistering 71 percent from the field in the first half as they jumped out to a 63-34 lead at the break.

Eirons was voted the Tournament MVP while Goldschmidt was selected All-Tournament. Capital’s Nate Stahl and Steve Kyser, as well as Illinois College’s Joe Womble and St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) College Justin Gist were named to the All-Tournament team. Capital defeated Illinois College 76-53 in the other first round game while Illinois College scored a 91-63 win over St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) College in the consolation game.

10/30/07 Mount men's basketball chosen sixth in the HCAC Preseason Coaches Poll

The College of Mount St. Joseph has been picked to finish sixth in the HCAC this season in the HCAC Men's Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll. Franklin received five first place votes and was voted first in the poll, followed by Defiance (three first place votes), Transylvania, Hanover and Bluffton. After the Mount was Anderson (one first place vote), Manchester and Rose-Hulman. Franklin won the last season's HCAC Championship.

The Mount will open 2007-08 season play in the Nov. 16-17 Franklin Savings Tip-off Tournament. The Lions will take on St. Joseph's (NY) College at 7 p.m. on Nov. 16. The consolation game will be played at 3 p.m. and the championship will take place at 7 p.m. on Nov. 17.

8/14/07 Jacobs High School's Leon Mobley to attend the Mount and play basketball this season

The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that Jacobs High School's Leon Mobley has committed to attend the Mount and play basketball this winter for the Lions.

Mobley averaged nearly 10 points, 4.5 rebounds and three blocks per game his junior season. He is a 6-foot-4, 176-pound forward who also played high school football. His high school basketball coach was Rod Pierce, an assistant with the Mount. Leon, the son of Donna Mobley and Leon Hughes, is planning on majoring in Sports Management.

7/31/07 Bourbon County High School’s Nick Sosby to attend the College and play basketball this winter

The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that Bourbon County High School’s Nick Sosby has committed to attend the College of Mount St. Joseph and play basketball in the winter of 2007 for the Lions.

Sosby, a 6-foot-4 guard, gained three varsity letters while in high school and was a team captain and a starter this past season. He also competed in track & field his junior year while at Bourbon County, was in the National Honor Society, was in the academic honor club BETA, was in the Spanish Honor Society, and was the Future Business Leaders of America President. His high school coach was Mike Flynn.

Nick is the son of Lydia and Tony Sosby. He is undecided on his college major.

6/20/07 Mount announces four more student-athletes to attend the College and play basketball this winter

The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that Tony Amick (Scottsburg High School/IN), Jordan Brown (Kettering Alter High School), Hilton John Rodriguez (Centerville High School) and Ed Thomas (Briggs High School/Grove City) have committed to attend the College of Mount St. Joseph and play basketball in the winter of 2007 for the Lions.

Amick, a 6-foot-2 guard/forward, averaged nearly 18 points and 5.3 rebounds per game last season as won all-conference honors and was conference Player of the Year. He was a two-year varsity letter winner, and a 1 ½ year starter. Amick also was awarded an honors diploma, was in the Big Brothers Club and on the Who’s Who list. Brown, a 6-foot-3 forward, averaged nearly nine points and nine rebounds per game last season. He was selected second team all-league and third team all-area. Brown was a two-year varsity letter winner, two year starter and a team captain while in high school.

Rodriguez, a 6-foot-5 forward, was a two-year varsity letter winner. Thomas, a 5-foot-9 guard, averaged eight points and four assists per game last season. He won four varsity letters, was a one-year varsity starter and a team captain. Thomas was a two-time scholar athlete winner, and won the Golden Bruin and Coaches Awards, as well as being on the honor roll and being a senior mentor.

6/7/07 Mount adds four more first-year players to list of recruits

The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that they have received four more committments for the upcoming season.

They are: Spencer Jared (Middletown Madison), Philip "PJ" Metz (North Decatur, IN High School), Matt Mink (Fairfield High School) and Dusty Simcox (Tallmadge High School).

Jared, a 6-foot guard, averaged 23 points per game his senior season and won all-Southwest District honors; Metz, is a 6-foot-2 guard that averaged over 10 points per game his senior season; Mink, a 6-foot-5 frontcourt player, averaged 15 points and eight rebounds per game his senior season, and was all-conference and Simcox, a 6-foot-5 forward/center averaged 11 points and seven rebounds per game his senior season and received all-league recognition.

5/24/07 Hamilton Badin High School senior Shaun Alexander to attend the College and play basketball this winter

The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that Hamilton Badin High School senior Shaun Alexander has committed to attend the College of Mount St. Joseph and play basketball in the winter of 2007 for the Lions.

Alexander, a 6-foot-4 forward/post, earned three varsity letters, was a three-year varsity starter and a varsity captain at Hamilton Badin. He averaged 10 points and nearly six rebounds his junior season and 10.5 points and nearly eight rebounds per game during his senior campaign. During his junior year he was the team’s top rebounder and was the Rams top rebounder and top defensive player for his senior season. He also won h onorable mention all-district, honorable mention all-Butler County, and second team GCL Central honors while at Badin.

In addition, Alexander has played AAU basketball and competed on AAU state champion and junior national teams. He was involved with the Ohio DECA marketing club and won academic honors at Badin. His high school head coach was Nick Argentati.

Shaun is the son of Darroll and Janet Alexander. He is planning on majoring in Sports Management.

5/21/07 Mount announces two more student-athletes to attend the College and play basketball this winter

The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy senior Andrew Peterson and Louisville (KY) St. Xavier High School senior Aaron Robison have committed to attend the College of Mount St. Joseph and play basketball in the winter of 2007 for the Lions.

Peterson, a 5-foot-11 guard, earned three varsity letters, was a three-year starter and a captain at CHCA. He averaged 13.3 points, three assists and four steals per game his junior season and 12.4 points, four assists and four steals per game during his senior season. Following his junior season he was named first team all-conference and was honorable mention all-district; and was selected first team all-conference and second team all-district for his senior season. Peterson also ran track in high school.

Andrew is the son of Jody and Joel Peterson. He is undecided on his college major.

Robison, a 6-foot-7 forward/center, averaged nearly 10 points, and seven rebounds per game his senior season. He was a two-year varsity letter-winner, a two-year starter and also a team captain in high school. In addition he was named to an all-tournament team his junior season and won his team’s Coaches Award during his senior season. Robison also played high school football for two years.

Aaron is the son of Stacy and Patrick Robison. He is planning to major in Business at the Mount.

5/2/07 Three high school players commit to attend the Mount and play basketball for the Lions

The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that McNicholas High School senior Kevin Jacobson, Hamilton Badin High School senior John Valerius and Loyalsock Township (Williamsport, PA) High School senior Chris Cioffi have committed to attend the College of Mount St. Joseph and play basketball in the winter of 2007-2008 for the Lions.

Jacobson, a 6-foot-5 guard/forward, earned two varsity basketball letters in high school, and also played football for the Rockets as a sophomore. He was on his school’s honor roll for four years. Kevin is the son of Barbara Jacobson and played for Pat Stricker at McNicholas. He is undecided on what his major is going to be at the Mount.

Valerius, a 6-foot-6 forward/center, garnered two varsity letters, was a two-year starter and senior captain. He was first in the GCL Central last season in blocks per game, and won his team’s Coaches and Senior Awards. Valerius also competed in high school track & field and was named second team all-GCL his junior year. In addition, he was on his school’s honor roll during his junior and senior years and has received the College of Mount St. Joseph Trustee Scholarship.

John is the son of Theresa and Bill Valerius and played for Nick Argentati at Badin. He is planning on majoring in Education and/or Mathematics at the Mount.

Cioffi, a 5-foot-11 guard, comes to the Mount from NCAA Division III York College of Pennsylvania. As a freshman, Cioffi played on York’s conference championship team and NCAA Final Four squad during the 2004-2005 season. He averaged 19 points and seven assists per game as a high school senior. In addition he earned three varsity letters, was a two-year varsity starter and a team captain while in high school.

Chris is the son of Patricia and Ronald Cioffi. He is planning on majoring in Sports Management at the Mount.

3/15/07 Mount to host summer basketball camps

The College of Mount St. Joseph men's basketball team will be hosting various summer basketball camps for both boys and girls.
