LIONS BASKETBALL PROGRAM TO HOST SUMMER CAMPS
6/8/09 Lions’ basketball team gets three more commitments
The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that East Central High School senior Tyler Theising, New Haven High School senior Joel Sovine and Homewood-Flossmoor (IL) Community High School senior Najeeb Abdur-Rahman will attend the College this fall and play basketball for the Lions.
Theising, a guard, received four varsity letters and was a three-year starter in high school. He was a team captain, won his team’s free throw award his junior season and collected the team’s rebound, assist, and MVP awards following his senior season. In addition, he was named to the East-West All-Star team and was an All-Dearborn County All-Conference honoree. Theising also played high school baseball and was on the Honor Roll. Tyler played for David Disbro at East Central. Theising is the son of Rosemary and Bill Theising and is planning on majoring in Sport Management.
Sovine, a center, was a two-time varsity letter-winner, a two-year starter and a team captain. He averaged 8.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game his junior season and upped those averages to 12.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per game his senior season. Sovine was an All-NHC First Team and All-Region Honorable Mention selection following his senior season. In addition, he was involved with Campus Life and was on his school’s Honor Roll 9-12 grades. Sovine played for Kurt Dager at New Haven. Joel, the son of Jenny and Kevin Sovine, is planning on majoring in Business.
Abdur-Rahman, a guard, averaged 12 points, five assists and three rebounds per game as a starter and captain his senior season. He was invited to the Reebok All-America Camp and was a three-point Sectional Finalist his senior campaign. Abdur-Rahman was on his school’s A/B Honor Roll, in the National Honor Society, won a Distinguished Scholar Award and played high school football his freshman season. Najeeb, the son of Khaleel Abdur-Rahman, is planning of majoring in Athletic Training.
5/14/09 Beechwood (KY) High School senior Brian Romes and Scecina Memorial (IN) High School senior Colin Smart to attend the Mount and play basketball
The College of Mount St. Joseph officially announces that Beechwood (KY) High School senior Brian Romes and Scecina Memorial (IN) High School senior Colin Smart will attend the Mount in the fall of 2009 and play basketball.
Romes, a 6-foot-2 guard/forward, averaged 13 points, three rebounds and an assist per game as a junior and upped that to 16 points, three rebounds and two assists per game, on 60 percent field goal shooting, including 38 percent from three-point range, his senior season. Romes won two varsity letters, was a two-year varsity starter and a team captain. In addition, he was the team’s top defensive player, made the District All-Tournament team, was an All-Conference honoree and a Northern Kentucky All-Star his junior season. After his senior season, Romes won team defensive player, All-District Tournament team and Northern Kentucky All-Start honors. In the classroom Romes garnered First Honors, was an Academic All-State honoree and had a 3.85 GPA.
He played for Rick Shumate at Beechwood High School. Brian, the son of Dana and Bob Romes, is planning on majoring in Business at the Mount.
Smart, a 6-foot-3 forward, averaged 12 points and seven rebounds a game as a junior and 14.6 points and nine rebounds his senior season. His junior season saw him make Honorable Mention All-City, while following his senior season he was named First Team All-Conference and Honorable Mention All-City honors. In addition, Smart played volleyball and tennis in high school, was a Scholar Athlete winner and involved with the Spell Bowl, while garnering a 3.6 GPA.
Smart played for Mark Wilson at Scecina Memorial. Colin, the son of Tracy and Brian Smart, is planning on majoring in Communications at the Mount.
