5/9/08 Lions season ends today at the HCAC Tournament; Mount falls to Transylvania 3-2 an to Rose-Hulman 9-4
The College of Mount St. Joseph saw its season end today at the first day of the HCAC Tournament. The Lions fell 3-2 in 13 innings to Transylvania and then dropped a 9-4 decision to Rose-Hulman. The Mount ends the 2008 season with a 24-18 record.
Todd Schwertman (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) pitched seven shutout innings against Transylvania today, holding the Pioneers to just four hits and a walk while striking out a batter. The two teams played to a scoreless tie through 10 innings before Transy broke through on Mount reliever
Steve Matre (Cincinnati, OH/Purcell Marian), scoring two runs in the 11th innings. The Lions, however, got the runs back in the bottom of the inning, on a RBI single by
Chris Hall (Mason, OH/Mason) and an RBI fielder's choice by
Tyler Bien (Cincinnati, OH/Roger Bacon). The Pioneers would plate the go-ahead and eventual winning run in the 13th inning on an RBI single off off Mount pitcher
John Strittholt (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin), dropping his record on the season to 4-4.
Jake Daugherty (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain) and
Matt Flamm (Cincinnati, OH/LaSalle) had two hits each in the game.
The Mount jumped out to a lead of 2-0 after three innings against Rose-Hulman, but could not hold on as the Engineers scored three runs in the sixth inning to take the lead, five runs in the eight inning and once in the ninth for the win.
Zach Grove (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) suffered the loss, falling to 3-1 on the season. Flamm had four hits while
Seth DeBra (Loveland, OH/Milford) had three hits and Hall chipped in two singles.

5/6/08 Lions lose at Division I Cincinnati, 20-3
In their final action of the 2008 regular season, the Mount fell tonight at Division I Cincinnati, 20-3. The Lions head into this week's HCAC Tournament with a 24-16 overall mark.
Nick Weimer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills), Seth DeBra (Loveland, OH/Milford) and Tyler Bien (Cincinnati, OH/Roger Bacon) had two hits each in the game. Ryan Rodriguez (Cincinnati, OH/Moeller) and Weimer blasted home runs in the game, as the Mount used six pitchers.
5/5/08 Mount baseball to take on the University of Cincinnati on May 6; pairings and game times announced for the 2008 HCAC Baseball Tournament
The Lions will play one more regular season game in 2008 - taking on the University of Cincinnati on May 6 - before hosting and playing in the HCAC Tournament.
The HCAC Tournament gets underway on May 8 when the Lions play #4 seed Transylvania University at 3 p.m. The other first round game will pit Franklin College against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at 6:30 p.m. Both games will be played at the University of Cincinnati's Marge Schott Stadium.
Day two action, on May 9, will also be played at UC's Marge Schott Stadium. Action gets underway that day at noon with the opening game losing teams playing each other. The first round winners will play at 3 p.m. while the day's final action will pit the game three winner against the game four loser at 6:30 p.m.
The HCAC Tournament will conclude on May 10, at Midland Field in Amelia, OH, with the game four winner vs. the game five winner for the Championship at noon. Game 7 of the HCAC Tournament, if necessary, is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. The HCAC Tournament winner will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament first round regional.
5/4/08 HCAC baseball standings finds Mount at top and host of the HCAC Tournament; Lions to play Transy in first round game
The College of Mount St. Joseph, winners of this season's HCAC regular season title with a 16-5 mark, will host the HCAC Tournament as the top seed starting May 8. Thursday's first round games will pit the Mount vs. #4 seed Transylvania University and #2 seed Franklin College vs. #3 seed Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Franklin was 16-6 in conference play this season while Rose-Hulman finished 15-6 and Transy was 15-7.
Further details regarding the times and order of the games will be released on Monday, May 5.
5/4/08 Lions post 9-7 win over Defiance College and clinch HCAC regular season title
The College of Mount St. Joseph won the HCAC regular season title today, thanks to a 9-7 home win over Defiance College and a Transylvania University win against Rose-Hulman. The Mount, 24-15, 16-5 in the conference, will host the four-team HCAC Tournament starting May 8. Check the Mount's baseball web page later in the week for pairings.
The Lions entered play today tied with Rose-Hulman for the conference lead. Defiance jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning only to see the Mount tie the game at 3-all in the third inning. The Mount plated one more run in the fourth inning, to go ahead, four runs in the fith inning and one run in the sixth inning to grab a 9-6 lead.
Robert Urmston (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) had four hits and three RBI while teammate
Nick Weimer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) collected three hits to pace the Mount's offense.
Seth DeBra (Loveland, OH/Milford) added two hits and three RBI. Starter
Justin Zieman (Batavia, OH/Amelia) got the win for the Lions, raising his record to 5-3 on the season.

5/3/08 Mount sweeps HCAC home doubleheader against Defiance College on Senior Day; pulls into first place conference tie with Rose-Hulman
With one game remaining in the HCAC regular season race, the Mount and Rose-Hulman are tied for first place in the conference with identical records after the Lions swept Defiance College today, 7-2 and 15-13. The Mount, 23-15 overall, is 15-5 in the HCAC and will play the Yellow Jackets on May 4 in their regular season finale. Rose-Hulman, also at 15-5 in the conference, will play at Transylvania on May 4. Franklin (16-6) and Transylvania (14-7) trail the conference co-leaders as the top four teams will advance to next weekend's HCAC Tournament, with the the regular season champion hosting the Conference Tournament.
The Mount had two big innings in game one today - scoring three runs in the first inning and adding four runs in the sixth inning - to post the win over the Yellow Jackets. Ryan Rodriguez (Cincinnati, OH/Moeller) had two hits and three RBI while Seth DeBra (Loveland, OH/Milford) clouted a two-run home run. Zach Grove (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) pitched a complete game, going seven innings, allowing seven hits, one walk and two runs.
Pinch-hitter Tyler Bien (Cincinnati, OH/Roger Bacon) had a two-run single in the eighth inning of the second game giving the Mount a 15-13 lead. Steve Matre (Cincinnati, OH/Purcell Marian) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his ninth save of the season, as the Lions made a winner of Nate Long (Hope, IN/Hauser), who upped his season record to 2-1. The Mount pounded out 16 hits in the win, as Brandon Buchanan (Reading, OH/Reading) had four hits and Ben Stroube (North Bend, OH/St. Xavier) added three hits and three RBI. Trace Norton (Reading, OH/Reading) and Stroube blasted home runs in the game two triumph.

4/29/08 Mount knocks off Hanover College at home, 4-2 to remain in second place in the HCAC
The Lions recorded a 4-2 home win tonight over HCAC-foe Hanover College to run their conference record to 13-5 which keeps them one back of HCAC-leader Rose-Hulman (14-4). The Lions lead Transylvania and Franklin by 1/2 game, with each sporting 13-6 marks. The top four teams advance to the HCAC Tournament, with the regular season champion to host the May 8-10 HCAC Tournament. The regular season ends this weekend as the Mount takes on Defiance at home starting a three-game series on May 2.
With the score tied 1-all in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Lions plated two runs, on RBIs by
Ryan Rodriguez (Cincinnati, OH/Moeller) and
Ben Stroube (North Bend, OH/St. Xavier). Hanover got one run back in the sixth inning, to cut the Mount lead to 3-2 but the Lions added an insurance run in the seventh on Rodriguez' second RBI of the game.

4/26/08 Lions split doubleheader at home against Manchester College, losing 7-0 and winning 12-4
With one week remaining in the regular season, the Lions kept pace today with the HCAC leaders as they split a home doubleheader against conference foe Manchester College, losing 7-0 but rebounding to win the nightcap, 12-4. The Mount is now 20-15 overall, and 12-5 in the HCAC - in second place, one game behind conference leader Rose-Hulman (13-4). Transylvania and Franklin are next in the conference standings sporting identical 13-6 marks. The top four teams will advance to next weekend's HCAC Tournament, with the top regular season team hosting the tournament.
The Lions return to action on April 29 when they host HCAC-rival Hanover College.
Manchester held the Lions to just six hits in the opener today, as they plated three runs in the fourth inning and four more runs in the sixth inning.
Ryan Rodriguez (Cincinnati, OH/Moeller) and
Seth DeBra (Loveland, OH/Milford) had two hits each for the Mount as they stranded seven runners on base and were blanked for just the second time this season.
The Mount trailed by a 4-2 score heading into the bottom of the seventh inning in game two but blew the game open with a 10-run scoring outburst in their at-bat to take a commanding 12-4 lead. They totaled nine of their hits in that one frame, and got two-RBI hits from
Ben Stroube (North Bend, OH/St. Xavier) and
Nick Weimer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) in the seventh inning. Stroube had three hits in the game while DeBra added a two-run home run.
Brian Farrell (Cincinnati, OH/Elder) claimed the win in relief, his first victory of the season.
4/24/08 Lions record 9-6 HCAC win at home over Manchester College
The Mount got their three-game weekend home series against the Manchester College Spartans off to a winning start tonight with a 9-6 victory. The Lions are now 19-14 overall, 11-4 in the HCAC while Manchester falls to 16-19, 9-10. Transylvania leads the HCAC with a 13-4 mark while the Lions are tied for second place with Rose-Hulman, both at 11-4.
The Lions and Spartans will play a doubleheader on April 25 at Midland Field starting at 12 p.m.
The Mount jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings. They tacked on two more runs in the fourth and a single run in the sixth inning. Manchester put up five runs in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 9-6 but could get no closer.
Steve Matre (Cincinnati, OH/Purcell Marian) pitched the two final innings, striking out five batters, for his seventh save of the season.
Zach Grove (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) started and pitched six innings, allowing seven hits, one run (one earned run), and recording six strikeouts, running his record to 2-0 on the season.
Matt Flamm (Cincinnati, OH/LaSalle) led the offense with three hits, two runs and two RBI while three other players had two hits each.
4/22/08 Mount loses at Transylvania 4-2; slip into second place tie in the HCAC
Host Transylvania University held the Mount's potent offense to two runs and seven hits en route to a 4-2 win today. The Lions are now 18-14 overall, 10-4 in the HCAC and tied with Rose-Hulman for the second-best record in the conference. Transy leads the HCAC with a 12-4 mark. The top four teams (based on winning percentage) qualify to the HCAC Tournament with the first place team hosting the tournament.
The Lions are back in action this coming weekend, when they host Manchester College for a three-game series starting on April 25 with a single game and an April 26 doubleheader.
Transy posted leads to 3-1 after two innings and 4-1 after four innings as they halted the Mount's six-game winning streak. The Lions cut the deficit to 4-2 in the ninth inning. They loaded the bases with no outs but could get only one run in, on a sacrifice fly by Nick Weimer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills). Ryan Rodriguez (Cincinnati, OH/Moeller) hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season in the first inning to start the scoring in the game for the Mount.
John Strittholt (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) dropped to 3-3 on the season, pitching seven innings, allowing six hits, four runs (two earned), two walks and three strikeouts. Seth DeBra (Loveland, OH/Milford) and Robert Urmston (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) had two hits each.
4/19/08 Lions record doubleheader sweep at Anderson and win three-game series, 3-0
The Mount completed their three-game series sweep at Anderson University today, winning both games of a doubleheader, 9-4 and 14-3, to run their conference record to an HCAC-best 10-3 (.769 winning percentage). The Lions, 17-13 overall, lead the conference by one-half game over Transylvania University (10-4, .714). Anderson falls to 17-13, 7-7.
The Mount will host a non-conference game on April 20 when they take on Miami University Middletown.
The Lions jumped out to a 4-1 lead in game on today after three innings versus the Ravens and never looked back. Anderson did cut the decifit to 6-4 in the sixth inning but the Lions put the game away with three runs in the seventh inning. Justin Zieman (Batavia, OH/Amelia) pitched 5 2/3 innings for his fourth win of the season while Ryan Rodriguez (Cincinnati, OH/Moeller) led the Mount's offense with three of the team's 10 hits. Four different players, including Rodriguez, had two RBI each.
The Mount's offense got going early again in game two, plating four runs in the first inning and five more runs in the second inning to take a commanding 9-0 lead after two innings of play. They scored in only one other inning in the game - the sixth - but tacked on five more runs in that frame. Offensively the team pounded out 16 hits, as Ben Stroube (North Bend, OH/St. Xavier), Seth DeBra (Loveland, OH/Milford), Matt Flamm (Cincinnati, OH/LaSalle) and Rodriguez had three hits each. Five different players scored two runs or more. Todd Schwertman (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) tossed seven innings to up his record to 4-2 on the campaign.
4/18/08 Lions claim first game of three-game weekend series at Anderson University, 11-9
The Mount plated eight runs in the fifth inning today as they recorded an 11-9 come-from-behind win at Anderson University in the opener of a three-game weekend HCAC series. The Lions are now 15-13 overall, and lead the conference with an 8-3 mark (.727 winning percentage). Franklin is in second in the HCAC with an 11-5 record, good for a .688 winning percentage. Anderson falls to 17-11, 7-5 with the loss. The two teams will hook up for a noon doubleheader on April 19 at Anderson.
The host Ravens held leads of 6-2 after three innings and 8-2 after four innings before the Mount offensive explosion in the fifth inning. The Lions pounded out eight hits en route to eight runs in that frame to forge ahead 10-8. Anderson added a run in the fifth inning while the Mount scored once more in the sixth inning to complete the scoring in the game.
Ten different Mount players accounted for the Lions' 16 hits in the game, with Robert Urmston (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) going four-for-four. Ben Stroube (North Bend, OH/St. Xavier) and Seth DeBra (Loveland, OH/Milford) had two RBI each. 4/16/08 Mount records a 10-6 win over Wilmington College
The Lions jumped out to leads of 4-1 and 6-2 tonight en route to a 10-6 over Wilmington College in Chillicothe, OH. The Mount is now 14-13 overall while Wilmington falls to 8-17. The Lions will open up a three-game HCAC series this weekend, April 18, at Anderson University.
The Mount pounded out 15 hits today, including home runs from Seth DeBra (Loveland, OH/Milford) and Jake Daugherty (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain). Brandon Buchanan (Reading, OH/Reading) had three hits while four other Lions' players had two hits each.
Ben Hunterman (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) pitched five innings for the win, his third of the season in four decisions.
4/13/08 Mount at Rose-Hulman rained out; will not be made-up
The Lions scheduled game at Rose-Hulman today was rained out for a second straight day, forcing the cancellation of the third and final game of the series between the two teams. The game will not be made-up.
4/11/08 Lions split HCAC doubleheader at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology
The Mount split an away conference doubleheader today at Rose-Hulman, losing the first game 6-1 and winning the second game 7-5. The Lions are now 13-13 overall and 7-3 in the HCAC while Rose-Hulman goes to 19-9, 6-4. The Mount sits atop the HCAC standings in a first place tie with Anderson, both sporting 7-3 marks.
The Lions were held to just four hits in the first game, and committed five errors, as Rose-Hulman plated two runs in the third inning and four runs in the fourth inning. Nick Weimer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) had a solo home run for the Mount in the sixth inning. Justin Zieman (Batavia, OH/Amelia) suffered the loss, dropping his record to 3-2.
Weimer was the hitting star of game two today, as he blasted a double, triple and home run in the game. His three-run round tripped in the eighth inning put the Lions ahead 7-5. Todd Schwertman (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) started and pitched seven innings, picking up his third win of the season while teammate Steve Matre (Cincinnati, OH/Purcell Marian) tossed two scoreloss innings for his team-high fifth save.
Ben Stroube (North Bend, OH/Taylor) added three hits while Ryan Rodriguez (Cincinnati, OH/Moeller) hit his team-high tying fourth home run of the season. Weimer also has four home runs this season.
4/9/08 Mount falls by a 12-11 score at home to Asbury College
Ryan Rodriguez (Cincinnati, OH/Moeller) blasted a bases loaded three-run double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth tonight to pull the Mount to within one run of visiting Asbuy College, before the Lions fell, 12-11. The Mount is now 12-12 overall and will play a three-game series this weekend at Rose-Hulman starting April 11.
Asbury had led the game 7-2 after three innings of play before the Mount cut the deficit to 7-6 in the fourth inning. Asbury jumped ahead 12-7 in the ninth. The two teams used 14 pitchers between them and combined for 23 runs, 24 hits and five errors. Ben Stroube (North Bend, OH/St. Xavier) had two hits, including a home run while teammates Seth DeBra (Loveland, OH/Milford), Matt Flamm (Cincinnati, OH/LaSalle) and Rodriguez each had two hits.
4/8/08 Lions climb back over .500 mark with a 14-4 home win over Centre College
Ryan Rodriguez (Cincinnati, OH/Moeller) and Nick Weimer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) pounded out three hits each as the Mount won 14-4 over Centre College. The Lions are now 12-11 overall and will play a non-conference home game on April 9 against Asbury College.
Rodriguez had a home run and four RBI as he and teammate Ben Stroube (North Bend, OH/St. Xavier) hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning. The game was called in the seventh inning. The Lions had 15 hits in the game and made a winner of starter Ben Hunterman (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills), who raised his record to 2-1.
4/6/08 Lions split home doubleheader against Alice Lloyd College
Justin Zieman (Batavia, OH/Amelia) ran his record to 3-1 and Matt Flamm (Cincinnati, OH/LaSalle) had a home run and three RBI in the first game today as the Mount defeated Alice Lloyd College, 5-2. The Lions appeared to be on their way for a doubleheader sweep leading game two 4-0 heading into the seventh inning, before allowing eight runs in the final innng for an 8-4 setback. The Mount is 11-11 on the season and will host Centre College on April 8.
Flamm added two solo home runs in game of the doubleheader. Ben Stroube (North Bend, OH/St. Xavier) and Ben McQueen (Burlington, KY/Conner) had two hits each in the nightcap.
4/5/08 Mount drops non-conference game at Marian College, 6-5
Host Marian College scored four runs in the first inning and hung on today to record a 6-5 victory over the Mount. The Lions are now 10-10 on the season while NAIA Marian College goes to 8-16. The Mount will host a home doubleheader (Midland Field) against NAIA Alice Lloyd College on April 6 at 1 p.m.
The Mount put a three-run third inning, cutting the deficit to 4-3 and tied the game at 4-all in the fourth before giving up two runs in the bottom of the inning. They added another run in the ninth to cut the score to 6-5 but stranded the tying run at first base to end the game. Seth DeBra (Loveland, OH/Milford) had two of the Mount's eight hits in the game. John Strittholt (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) took the loss, evening his record at 2-2 on the season.
4/3/08 Lions' senior Justin Zieman named National College Baseball Writers Association National Honorable Mention Pitcher of the Week
The Mount's Justin Zieman (Batavia, OH/Amelia) has been named one of the NCBWA National Honorable Mention Pitchers of the Week. Zieman tossed a seven inning (complete game) two-hit shutout in a 5-0 win over Franklin College. Zieman struckout a Mount single-game high tying 14 batters and allowed only one walk.
4/2/08 Lions blank HCAC-foe Hanover College on the road, 8-0
Todd Schwertman (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills)pitched shutout ball for eight innings, allowing five hits, no walks and striking out eight batters, as the Mount rolled to an 8-0 road win at Hanover. The Lions are now 10-9 on the seasn and 6-2 in the HCAC while Hanover goes to 4-14, 1-6. The Mount will play Capital University on April 3 at 5 p.m. at the University of Cincinnati's Marge Schott Stadium.
Seth DeBra (Loveland, OH/Milford) had a home run - his first of the season - and the Lions pounded out 12 hits, as four batters had two hits each. Ben Stroube (North Bend, OH/St. Xavier) had three RBI. Schwertman is now 2-2 on the season.
4/1/08 Mount senior pitcher Justin Zieman wins HCAC Pitcher of the Week honor .jpg)
College of Mount St. Joseph’s Justin Zieman (Batavia, OH/Amelia) was outstanding in the Lions’ 5-0 win over Franklin and has been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week. The senior pitcher pitched a seven inning, two hit, complete game shutout against the Grizzlies, allowing only one walk. He tied the Mount single-game strikeout record with 14 punch outs against Franklin.
Zieman stands 2-1 on the season and has a 2.57 ERA. In 21 innings of work, the senior has 21 strikeouts and just six walks this season. MSJ (9-9, 5-2 HCAC) currently sits in a three-way tie for second place in the conference standings.
3/30/08 Lions lose rubber game of three-game series to Franklin College, 8-6
Visiting Franklin College jumped out to a 4-2 lead after two innings of play, and held a 7-2 advantage heading into the bottom of the sixth inning today, as the Mount fell, 8-6. The Lions are now 9-9 on the season, 5-2 in the HCAC while Franklin goes to 12-7, 5-2.
Matt Flamm (Cincinnati, OH/LaSalle) had three of the Lions' 10 ten hits, and also drove in four runs with two doubles. Nick Weimer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) chipped in two hits.
3/29/08 Mount splits doubleheader at Franklin College, winning 5-0 and losing 12-8; Head Coach Chuck Murray records his 300th career coaching victory
Justin Zieman (Batavia, OH/Amelia) pitched a two-hit shutout in game one today, Head Coach Chuck Murray's 300th career coaching win, and had 14 strikeouts leading the Mount to a 5-0 win over Franklin College. The Grizzlies rebounded to post the win in game two, 12-8. The Mount and Franklin will play the third game of the series on March 30 at the University of Cincinnati, 1 p.m.
Zieman's 14 strikeouts tied a Mount single-game record. Nick Weimer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) and Ben Stroube (North Bend, OH/St. Xavier) had two hits each while Weimer had two RBI.
Franklin jumped out to a 7-0 lead in game two and led 9-8 after seven innings before plating three more runs in the eighth inning. Four different Lions had two hits each in the nightcap, as Stroube led the way with two doubles.
3/26/08 Lions improve to 6-1 all-time against Berea College with a 6-4 home win; Head Coach Chuck Murray one win away from 300 career wins
Ryan Rodriguez (Cincinnati, OH/Moeller) and Robert Urmston (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) each collected two hits to lead the Mount 6-4 home win tonight against Berea College. The Mount is now 8-7 on the season and will host HCAC-rival Franklin College in single, nine inning game on March 28. Berea goes to 5-9 with the loss.
John Strittholt (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) got the win to improve to 2-1 on the season.
The victory over Berea left Mount Head Coach Chuck Murray with a 299-179 career coaching record, all at the Mount. He is in his 12th season as the Lions head coach. He has been with the Lions' baseball program since its inception in 1994, when he served as the team's assistant coach through the 1996 season.
3/25/08 Mount records a 10-6 win over Transylvania University in HCAC play
The College of Mount St.Joseph ran its win streak to five games, and went to 4-0 in the HCAC, with a 10-6 win tonight against Transylvania University. The Lions are now 7-7 on the season and will play at home against Berea College on March 26. Transylvania goes to 11-3 with the loss, 1-3 in the HCAC.
The Lions led tonight 5-0 after five innings and never looked back, as starter Todd Schwertman (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) upped his record to 1-2 on the season. The Mount pounded out 14 hits in the game, led by Robert Urmston (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin), who had three hits and three RBI.
3/22/08 Mount posts HCAC home sweep over Bluffton University, winning 6-2 and 12-6
The Lions used two, three-run innings in the first game and plated six runs in the eighth inning of game two today en route to a 6-2 and 12-6 doubleheader sweep over visiting Bluffton University. The Mount is 6-7 overall, 3-0 in the HCAC while the Beavers go to 5-8, 0-3. The Lions are back in action on March 25 at 7 p.m. against HCAC-foe Transylvania. The game will be played at the University of Cincinnati's Marge Schott Stadium.
Robert Urmston (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) and Seth DeBra (Loveland, OH/Milford) had two hits and two RBI each to make a winner of starter Justin Zieman (Batavia, OH/Milford). Zieman, who evened his record at 1-1, pitched a complete game, going seven innings, allowing five hits, two runs (one earned), one walk and four strikeouts.
The Lions trailed by a 6-2 margin heading into the bottom of the seventh of the second game today, but scored four runs to knot the game at 6-all. The Lions took the lead and blew the game wide open in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring six runs to take a commanding 12-6 advantage. Urmston had a two-run double in the decisive eight inning as the Mount pounded out four hits and were aided by a Bluffton error.
Zach Grove (Wilmington, OH/Wilmington) gained the win, tossing three innings of relief while Steve Matre (Cincinnati, OH/Purcell Marian) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning. DeBra had three hits and five RBI in the nightcap while Ben Stroube (North Bend, OH/St. Xavier) also had three hits.
3/21/08 Lions record a 10-6 come-from-behind win over HCAC-foe Bluffton University
The Mount scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning today to erase a 6-2 deficit en route to a 10-6 win over Bluffton University. The Lions go to 4-7 on the season, 1-0 in the HCAC while Bluffton falls to 5-6, 0-1. The two teams will complete the three-game series on March 22 when they play a noon doubleheader at Xavier University.
Nick Weimer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) and Trace Norton (Reading, OH/Reading) pounded out three hits each to make a winner of Mount starter John Strittholt (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) who pitched seven innings. Steve Matre (Cincinnati, OH/Purcell Marian) closed out the game for the Lions, pitching the final two innings for his second save of the season. Strittholt evened his 2008 record at 1-1.
The Lions had five extra base hits in the game, as Robert Urmston (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) hit his first career collegiate home run and Norton added a triple.
3/19/08 Lions finish Florida Spring Break play with a 9-6 win against McDaniel College
Ryan Rodriguez (Cincinnati, OH/Moeller) tied a Mount single-game record with six hits today helping the Lions to a 9-6 win over McDaniel College. The win ends a four-game losing streak and ups the Mount's record to 3-7 on the season.
Rodriguez had five singles and a double - in six at-bats - tying Ryan Meyer's 2006 record against RPI. The Mount jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings. McDaniel College cut the Mount lead to 8-6 after scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning before Steve Matre (Cincinnati, OH/Purcell Marian) closed the door for his first save of the season. T.C. Wethington (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson) started and pitched 5 1/3 innings for his first collegiate win.
Three other Mount players had two hits each, as the Lions pounded out 17 hits in their 2008 Florida finale.

3/18/08 Mount losing streak reaches four with a 9-4 loss to St. Norbert College
St. Norbert College collected ten hits today, and was aided by six Mount errors, en route to a 9-4 win over the Lions in Florida. The Mount, losers of four in a row, falls to 2-7 on the season. The Mount returns to action on March 19 with a single game against McDaniel College.
The Lions trailed today by a 3-0 score after three innings, and found themselves down by a 5-0 deficit before scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Mount was down 5-4 after scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh but could get no closer, as they allowed five unearned runs in the game. Nick Weimer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) had two hits and two RBI to lead the Mount.
3/17/08 Lions lose third straight game with a 7-6 setback to Framingham State College
Framingham State College pushed across the winning run today with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning giving them a 7-6 win against the Lions in Florida. The Mount, losers of three straight, will resume action on March 18 with a single game against St. Norbert College. The Lions are 2-6 on the season.
The Lions had leads of 3-0 and 5-1 - heading into the bottom of the sixth inning - but gave up a run in the sixth, four runs in the eighth and the game-winner in the ninth. Five different Lions' batters collected two hits each. Nick Weimer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) had a double and triple while Trace Norton (Reading, OH/Readin) ripped his first collegiate home run in the game, and added two RBI.
Steve Matre (Cincinnati, OH/Purcell Marian) suffered the loss in relief.
3/16/08 Mount drops doubleheader to Carthage College
The Lions dropped a doubleheader today to Carthage College in Florida, losing 6-0 and 11-2 to fall to 2-5 on the season. The Mount is back in action on March 17 against Framingham State College in a single game.
The Mount could muster only three hits, and struckout 12 times against Carthage in game one. They trailed by a 4-0 score after three innings and allowed 11 hits in the game.
Game two saw the Lions get the offense going a bit, but the Lions fell short again. The Mount had six hits in the game, as Seth DeBra (Loveland, OH/Milford) had two hits, including a double and Chris Hall (Mason, OH/Mason) had a double and an RBI. Ben Stroube (North Bend, OH/St. Xavier) contributed a triple as the Mount found itself down by an 8-0 deficit after three innings of play. They scored both of their runs in the game in the bottom of the seventh inning.
3/15/08 Mount splits doubleheader vs. Mount Union College, losing 11-3 and winning 15-11
The Lions began Spring Break play today in Florida with a doubleheader against Mount Union College, losing the first game, 11-3; and grabbing a win in the second game by a 15-11 margin. The Lions are now 2-3 and are back in action on March 16 with a doubleheader against Carthage College.
The Mount laced out ten hits in the first game, led by Matt Flamm (Cincinnati, OH/LaSalle), who went 3-for-3, with two doubles, but lost the game. The Raiders led the Lions by an 11-0 score after three innings to coast to the win.
Game two saw Nick Weimer (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) rip two home runs, among his four hits, as the Lions captured their second win of the young season. Weimer added four runs and four RBI in the game while teammate Ryan Rodriguez (Cincinnati, OH/Moeller) blasted his first college home run and collect three RBI. The Mount had 19 hits in the game.
Seth DeBra (Loveland, OH/Milford) and Brandon Buchanan (Reading, OH/Reading) added three hits each as Nate Long (Hope, IN/Hauser) posted the win to even his record at 1-1 on the season.
3/2/08 Mount opens the 2008 season winning once and losing twice
Ben Hunterman (Cincinnati, OH/Oak Hills) went five innings of perfect relief, allowing three hits, no walks and striking out four batters as the Lions won on Saturday in their season-opener over Adrian College, 7-2. The Mount also played weekend host Birmingham Southern College on Saturday, dropping a 15-9 game and falling on Sunday to Birmingham Southern 5-4 in 11 innings.
The win was Hunterman's first of his college career. Matt Flamm (Cincinnati, OH/LaSalle) and Jake Daugherty (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain) had two hits each while teammate Ryan Rodriguez (Cincinnati, OH/Moeller) had a two-run RBI against Adrian.
The Lions pounded out 14 hits in the first loss versus Birmingham Southern with Brandon Buchanan (Reading, OH/Reading) leading the way with three hits and two RBI. The Mount led the final game 3-2 heading into the sixth inning only to fall with two outs in the 11th inning. Seth DeBra (Loveland, OH/Milford), Rodriguez and Daugherty had two hits each in the game.

The Mount received two points in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25 Poll, and are named in the "others receiving votes" section. The Lions had six points in the preseason poll.
2/26/08 Third Annual Dennis McRoberts Memorial Golf Outing to be held
The Third Annual Dennis McRoberts Memorial Golf Outing will be held on Saturday, June 21, at Walden Ponds Golf Club in Hamilton, Ohio. McRoberts is a former Mount graduate and Lions' four-year baseball player who lost his life in a tragic automobile accident on October 8, 2004.

1/29/08 Mount chosen for second place in the HCAC Pre-Season Baseball Coaches Poll
The College of Mount St. Joseph has been chosen for second place in the HCAC Pre-Season Baseball Coaches Poll . The nine conference coaches selected Transylvania first, followed by the Mount, Franklin, Anderson, and Manchester. Rose-Hulman, Bluffton, Hanover and Defiance round out the poll.
The Lions received two first-place votes, while Transy got six first-place votes. Anderson received the other first-place vote.
1/9/08 Three Mount players gain pre-season attention by Collegiate Baseball News
Seniors John Strittholt (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) and Seth DeBra (Loveland, OH/Milford), along with junior Steve Matre (Cincinnati, OH/Purcell Marian) have been tabbed by the Collegiate Baseball News as players to watch for the upcoming season. Strittholt and Matre are plitchers, while DeBra is a first baseman.
1/9/08 Lions open the 2008 season March 1 with a game vs. Adrian College
The Mount will open the new season on March 1 when they travel to Birmingham Southern College to take on Adrian College. They open their home schedule March 21 when they host HCAC-rival Bluffton University in doubleheader action.

10/25/07 Mount baseball to have Service Day at Mother Margaret Hall
One of the five commitment areas of the NCAA CHAMPS program here at the College of Mount St. Joseph is “Commitment to Service.” The definition of this is: To engage the student-athlete in service to his or her campus and surrounding communities. As part of this, the Mount’s baseball team continues to do this year after year with their Annual Volunteer Service Day at Mother Margaret Hall.
This year’s “Deck the Hall” service day will be held at the Mother Margaret Hall, across from the College of Mount St. Joseph, on Dec. 8, 2007. The team will be putting up 15 Christmas trees plus hall decorations from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
