How does the Master of Nursing (MN) degree compare to a BSN and MSN?
The MN is an accelerated, graduate-level program for individuals who have a non-nursing bachelor’s degree and would like to become a nurse.  It prepares the student in a short period of time to take NCLEX RN and enter the nursing profession. It does not prepare the nurse for advanced practice positions, such as a clinical nurse specialist or nurse practitioner.  Because the MN program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, many of these courses will count towards an MSN degree. The BSN is a four year degree program that also prepares you for NCLEX and to practice nursing at the bedside.

What are the admission requirements for the MN Program?

  1. In addition to the standard requirements, the following are also required to be considered for admission to the MN program:
  2. A cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 or higher in the bachelor’s degree or and acceptable score on the GRE:
  3. Completion of the following prerequisite courses with a “C” or higher, prior to the first MN course:
    • Anatomy and Physiology with lab (one year)
    • Chemistry (inorganic/organic/or biochemistry) with lab
    • Introduction to Statistics
    • Introduction to Sociology
    • Introduction to Psychology
    • Life Span Development
    • Microbiology with lab
    • Nutrition
    • Submission of a one-page, typewritten statement of your goals.
  4. Successful check of criminal background.
  5. Completion of a successful interview with the chairperson or nursing program director.

Do I need to take the GRE?
If you do not have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, then Yes.

What is the tuition and what kinds of financial aid are available?
Tuition for entry into the 2007 program is$36,800.  The cost of uniforms and lab fees are included in the tuition.  The cost of books and a stethoscope is not included in tuition, and would be an approximate charge of $1,200 for the duration of the program.  Financial aid is available in the form of Federal Stafford Loans, Federal Grad Plus Loan and in a Low Interest Loan Plan. Information about these options can be obtained by calling the Mount’s Student Administrative Services at 513-244-4418.

When are courses offered?
Courses are offered primarily during the day on Monday through Thursday with most Fridays off.

How long does it take to complete the MN program?
The program begins the 3rd week of May for 15 months of full-time study with the following breaks (determined by the College schedule):

  • 1 week off during the 4th of July holiday
  • 1 week in August between summer and fall semesters (usually the 3rd week)
  • 4 weeks during the Christmas/New Year’s Break from mid-December to mid-January
  • 1 week during Spring Break in March
  • 1 week in May between spring and summer semesters (usually the 3rd week)

What is the application date?
The MN Program has rolling admission.  Applications are taken until the class is full (approximately 32-36 students).

When does the program start?
The Program only starts mid-May of each calendar year and runs for 15 months.   Students who enter in May one year will graduate with an MN degree August of the following calendar year.

Where can I take my prerequisite courses?
Prerequisite courses can be obtained from any regionally accredited institution.  Although not recommended for all prerequisites, you may choose to test out of some of the prerequisite courses (Nutrition, Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Sociology, Life Span Development).

Can I finish my prerequisites after I apply, as long they are completed before classes start?
Yes, just indicate on the prerequisite table submitted with your application, the expected date of completion.  Any acceptance to the MN program will be contingent on your successful completion of these prerequisite courses.  Therefore, if you were unable to complete or fall below a “C” in a prerequisite course, the acceptance would be revoked.

Are prerequisites accepted if they are more than 10 years old?
Yes, with the exception of Anatomy and Physiology which needs to have been completed within 5 years of starting the MN program.
