A student majoring in psychology at the Mount has the opportunity to investigate human behavior and mental processes in a discipline that is highly valued by employers. The psychology major focuses on the theories, research techniques, and applications of the scientific study of human behavior and mental processes.
The curriculum is organized around a core of courses in human development, social psychology, personality, psychopathology and research, augmented by additional psychology courses of the student's choosing. Emphasis is placed on the development of critical thinking and research skills.
Opportunities for independent and collaborative research are provided. Baccalaureate graduates will have a strong liberal arts background and will be well prepared for jobs in human services, mental health, research, public relations, and business/marketing. The psychology major also provides graduate school preparation for students interested in a career in professional psychology.
Award-winning Students
During the past decade, seven of our students have won regional and national research awards from Psi Chi (the national honor society in psychology) for the high quality of their research.
The Mount is the only local college or university to receive so many awards. This distinction reflects the quality of our psychology program and our commitment to providing an outstanding undergraduate education.

Research Opportunities
As part of the Senior Thesis course, you’ll design and conduct your own research project and present it at an annual, campus-wide research poster session. You will also have the opportunity to present your work at a professional psychology conference where you will meet researchers from across the country and the world.
Another opportunity you may pursue is collaborating with faculty on research projects, and perhaps even jointly presenting at conferences. These research opportunities provide an excellent foundation, whether your next step is to enter the job market or go to graduate school.
Service Learning
The Mount's nationally-recognized Service Learning program allows students the option to obtain an additional academic credit, tuition-free, for faculty-supervised volunteer service in conjunction with selected psychology courses.
Co-op Opportunities
Many students elect to participate in the Mount's extensive cooperative education program as a way to gain valuable work experience and supplement their incomes while pursuing their academic goals.
Placements in psychology have included transitional housing, research assistantships, community mental health agencies, businesses, schools, hospitals, and youth organizations.
