Simulation Labs
High-tech, high-touch simulation take places in two expanded labs on Level I. Each lab models a typical hospital room with beds, overbed tables and bedside cabinets, and is equipped with a working sink, oxygen and suction. Both labs are wired for state-of-the-art technology.
Simulation Lab I
Students simulate patient care skills using a high-tech manikin that responds to routine medical interventions as well as emergencies, such as cardiac arrest. The high-fidelity simulation manikin produces a wide range of human functions such as pulse, heart rate and blood pressure. The chest rises and falls, and it can seize, perspire, talk, and produce tears to demonstrate human functions requiring nursing intervention.
Simulation Lab II
The second lab is a reproduction of a hospital room for additional simulation situations using infant and adult manikins, accommodating more students as enrollment grows. This area also includes a large screen television to play back simulation during the debriefing session.
Simulation Technology Center
A control center between the simulation labs is where a lab coordinator programs the manikins for instruction. This room also contains the monitors, computers and video equipment used for instruction. A large two-way window provides direct observation into the simulation labs.
Skills Labs
Level II houses two large skills lab/classroom facilities, each serving different aspects of nursing education. These areas accommodate the many lab sessions scheduled on days, evenings and weekends.
Patient Care Lab
Nursing students develop essential bedside patient care skills in this lab that represents multiple hospital rooms. Twelve patient bed areas include the equipment that nurses use regularly – hospital beds with headboards outfitted for oxygen and suction; overbed tables and bedside tables; equipment to monitor blood pressure; and other nursing supplies. Students work with life-size manikins to develop skills from turning patients to administering medication and responding to medical scenarios. The lab also contains bathroom fixtures typical in hospital settings as well as storage and a washer/dryer.
Dual Classroom/Skills Lab
Student nurses learn to perform health assessments and study medication administration using 10 plinths (examination tables) in this lab to perform systematic head-to-toe assessments. Classroom instruction accompanies these lab sessions.
