Mathematics majors at the Mount are provided with a strong analytical base that includes theoretical and practical perspectives while emphasizing both abstract thinking and application. Students are encouraged to reason critically and logically while applying theories appropriate to the subject and their levels of expertise.
The Mathematics program is offered to students of various needs and interests:
- Students who wish to enter some work-related area in which mathematics is applied, such as actuarial science, scientific programming, finance, or economics
- Students who wish to teach at the secondary or middle school levels.
- Students who wish to enter graduate school in mathematics or a related academic area.
- Students who desire to engage in critical thinking and problem solving.
All mathematics majors take a computer science course in which they are introduced to programming languages appropriate for problem-solving. Read descriptions of mathematics courses.
Students seeking a major in mathematics must also participate in the Cooperative Education program. In addition, all department seniors must complete a research project in mathematics.
