Art - iDesign

The purpose of the iDesign program is to provide an opportunity for students to learn advanced skills in Web and interactive design.  This minor or certificate program allows the students to concentrate in this area of design.  Traditionally students are provided an education in print-based graphic design.  However, with the advent of the Internet it was determined that additional knowledge was needed for our students to prepare for their careers in design.

It is helpful for Mount students to begin thinking about this option in their sophomore year.  The Web Page Design class is the necessary first step to begin the minor option.  The Advanced Web & Interactive Design course should be taken in their junior year and the Interactive Design Seminar in the senior year.  The certificate program in iDesign is also very appropriate for adult students returning to college to add skills in Web design.  This certificate is appropriate for a large segment of adults who want to improve their skills for current jobs or different job opportunities.

The degree programs most appropriate to supplement with the iDesign minor or certificate are Graphic Design and Communication.  Business majors and computer science students might also be interested in the design aspect of the program.

Additional technical skills such as computer graphics are increasingly important for the successful graphic artist.  Imagination, the ability to communicate ideas into images, attention to detail, analytical thinking and problem solving skills are the building blocks of commercial art.Because of the nature of the work, tight deadlines and possible creative "blocks", persistence, self discipline, stamina, perseverance and optimism are helpful personal attributes to cultivate.
