Admission to the teacher education program is a separate process from admission to the college. Department admission is generally initiated by the student during their sophomore year. Admission packets are available in the Education Division, or may be downloaded. Formal admission to the Education Department is required prior to enrolling in certain upper level education courses, including practica.
The Admission Application Packet
The completed application packet includes the following:
- Application form.
- EDU 190: Intro to Educational Profession
- Letter of interest/goal statement
- 2 Recommendations (1 - education faculty, and 1 - liberal arts faculty); Middle Childhood Education candidates need 3 recommendations (1 - education faculty, and 1 - each concentration area)
- Completion of a minimum of 28 credit hours (Including: COM 100, ENG 101, PSY 103, PSY 205, SOC 103, core curriculum MTH requirement).
- Minimum GPA of 2.8 with a “C” or better in all licensure courses. Since some liberal arts and science courses are taught only every two years, a student with a “D” in no more than two liberal arts and science courses that are also licensure courses may be accepted conditionally into the department or licensure program. Grades of “C” or better must be earned in those courses prior to student teaching.
- Transfer students must successfully complete one semester of full-time coursework at the College of Mount St. Joseph with grades recorded on official transcript in addition to at least 28 accepted credit hours from transferring institution.
- CCU students should have completed a minimum of 28 credits with at least 18 from CBC and 10 from The College of Mount St. Joseph.
Admission Procedures
The application packet materials may be picked up in the Education Division, or downloaded. When all of the required application materials are received, the Admission Committee will review the packet and make a recommendation for admission to the Department Chair. The Admission Committee meets monthly during regular fall and spring semesters. The Committee will review only complete packets.
Candidates for admission should keep in mind that they will be unable to enroll in courses requiring admission until formal admission has been granted. Therefore, students are encouraged to work with their faculty advisor to plan their application date accordingly, to avoid experiencing delays in progressing through their programs. Candidates will be notified by letter upon acceptance or denial of their admission application.
Admission Appeals
Students who believe they have met all of the admission criteria yet were not admitted have the right to appeal. Admission appeals must be submitted within 10 working days of the date on the notification letter. Appeals should be in writing, and addressed to the Department Chair. The appeal letter should indicate how the admission requirements have been satisfied, and should be accompanied with a letter of support from the candidate’s faculty advisor.
Admission for Cincinnati Christian University Students
The Mount offers a program in conjunction with Cincinnati Christian University which leads to a degree in Bible and Christian Education and initial teacher licensure. The Bible and Christian Education and general education portions of the degree are completed at CCU, and the teacher licensure courses are taken at the College of Mount St. Joseph. Admission requirements for CCU students are listed above.
