The dual major in chemistry and mathematics involves applying knowledge of mathematics to the field of chemistry.  Through the course work required, the student acquires an understanding of the concepts of the science of chemistry and of the concepts and structure of mathematics.

Emphasis is placed on learning to use mathematics in research and problem solving in the field of chemistry.  The student develops skills in critical thinking, observation, logic and the clear expression of ideas.

The skills important to the student contemplating this major include an above average science and math aptitude, detail orientation, the ability to work independently, patience and initiative.

The chemistry/mathematics major is excellent preparation for graduate school, secondary teaching (when combined with the appropriate education courses), or a position in business, industry or government.
