The Learning Center is a centralized system of support that enhances the ability of every motivated student to succeed in his/her studies at the College of Mount St. Joseph. It encompasses a Writing Center, Math Center, Peer Tutoring Program, diagnostic and placement testing, instructional and adaptive software, courses in basic academic skills, individualized assistance with study skills and learning issues, and academic support for students with disabilities.
Writing Center
The Writing Center provides individual consultation with students (and faculty and staff) at every stage of the writing process. Students receive personal attention from guides and teachers who assist in the development of writing and learning strategies that will help students become more effective writers.
Math Center
The Math Center serves as a nexus between the Math Department and the College's remediation and one-on-one instruction in mathematics. The Coordinator and a staff of student Math Assistants work with students who need a bit of extra help in order to progress and succeed in their required math, science, business, behavioral sciences, and other courses. They offer both individual help and study groups. Test preparation for the GRE and PRAXIS I are also provided through the Math Center.
Peer Tutoring
The Peer Tutoring program enhances student success in course work across the curriculum by providing concentrated, one-on-one intervention for students in need of extra instruction.
Individualized Study Skills Assistance
Individualized study skills assistance helps students acquire greater understanding of themselves and of the basic skills needed for success in the classroom: time management, goal-setting, effective reading and note-taking, test-taking strategies, and others.
COMPASS Testing
COMPASS is a computer-based diagnostic and placement test which measures reading, writing, and math skills. COMPASS can help students identify areas of strength and weakness and guide them in making appropriate course choices. All new traditional-age freshmen take the COMPASS Math test. Results are used, along with other factors, to place students in appropriate math courses.
CLEP
The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) provides students the opportunity to demonstrate college-level knowledge and earn college credit through a program of exams, regardless of where or how the students acquired their knowledge. Both traditional and non-traditional students can benefit from credit earned through CLEP.
Academic Support for Students with Disabilities
In compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the College of Mount St. Joseph provides access and accommodations for students with physical or mental impairments that substantially limit or restrict one or more of such major life activities as walking, seeing, hearing, or learning.
