What is college level learning?

Defining college-level learning is a complex process. Sometimes much of what is learned, no matter how useful, may not qualify as college-level learning or, the learnings may not demonstrate the depth to be included in a degree program. For example, a student who owned and managed a floral business for ten years will not get credit for ten years of business experience. However, the student might receive credit for her knowledge of retailing, marketing or skills in designing floral arrangements for different occasions.

Identifying learning experiences for potential credit is your first step. Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What did you learn?
  2. How did you learn it?
  3. Where did you learn it?
  4. Why did you learn it?

For a more complete initial assessment complete the Prior Learning Assessment Checklist and submit it to the PLA Coordinator.
