Project EXCEL is designed for students who have a primary diagnosis of a language-based learning disability and/or AD/HD and who have at least average to superior intellectual ability. Space is limited; therefore, each application is evaluated carefully to identify students whose needs best match the nature of support offered in Project EXCEL. Entering freshmen and transfer students are eligible.
The program goal for Project EXCEL is to assist traditional-age students in the transition from a secondary program to a college curriculum. Project EXCEL fosters academic success by promoting the development of learning strategies and compensatory skills which enable students to succeed in a regular postsecondary academic program. Project EXCEL offers students a broad spectrum of support services to meet specific individual needs:
- professional tutors
- monitoring of student progress and academic counseling
- scheduled consultations to promote organization and time management skills
- 2 credit hour course, Study for Success, for incoming freshmen
- access to and instruction in using technology
- access to speech recognition software
- direct instruction in academic success strategies, reading in the content areas, and developing coping skills
- academic advising with attention to students' specific learning needs
- writing lab
All Project EXCEL students are educated in the broad spectrum of the liberal arts and have the opportunity to attain an education that provides a career orientation. Students are free to major in any discipline offered at the College of Mount St Joseph and must meet the established department criteria.
NOTE: Students must be admitted to the College of Mount St. Joseph before applying for Project EXCEL.
