In partnership with West Clermont Local School District, the College of Mount St. Joseph presents:
Institute on Reading (I Read)
CANCELED
I Read is a professional development opportunity to enhance educators’ and related professionals’ knowledge base on our current understanding of reading development and instruction, on empirically-supported, state-of-the-art reading interventions, and on cutting-edge research on supporting students with significant reading concerns. This third-annual institute has been designed for teachers, reading specialists, speech and language therapists, and school psychologists.
Session I
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, August 3 - 5 | 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
This workshop is designed to teach teachers and parents the fundamental principles and concepts of language structure used to teach reading and spelling. Participants will learn the sound-symbol correspondences of the English language (phonics) and understand how phonemic awareness and the phonological system of language are integral to the reading process. Participants will learn how to apply knowledge of the English language to the teaching of reading and spelling.
Reading for Meaning: Strengthening Students' Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension Skills
This workshop is designed to teach teachers and parents how to implement research-based instructional practices to build a child’s fluency and comprehension skills. Participants will learn the key research findings for teaching fluency and comprehension, understand how to evaluate and improve current instructional practices, and learn specific research-based instructional strategies and interventions to develop fluency and comprehension skills.
Session II
Thursday and Friday, August 6 - 7 | 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Magical Morphemes: Reading, Writing and 'Rithmetic
Morphemes, the smallest unit of meaning in language, include whole words, prefixes, suffices, and roots. Knowing how words are built strengthens reading, spelling and vocabulary in many content areas. This workshop will help educators link research-based content with practical teaching strategies they can use tomorrow.
Processing Graphemes to Support Automatic Word Reading
This seminar is designed to provide a foundation in orthographic features of the English language and processes that support rapid, sight word reading. Participants will learn how developing readers visually process letters and words, how automatic word identification contributes to fluent reading, and how spelling skill develops. Assessment and instructional techniques will be explored.
