In partnership with the Center for Reading and Language Research at Tufts University, the College of Mount St. Joseph presents:

Institute on Reading and Dyslexia (I REaD)
August 4 – 8, 2008

I REaD is a professional development opportunity to enhance educators’ and related professionals’ knowledge base on our current understanding of reading development and dyslexia, on empirically-supported, state-of-the-art reading interventions, and on cutting-edge research on dyslexia and other reading difficulties. This second-annual institute has been designed for teachers, reading specialists, speech and language therapists, and school psychologists.

Session I - Phonics and the Structure of Language
Richard Sparks, Ed.D.
Monday and Tuesday, August 4 - 5, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Wednesday, August 6, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

This seminar is designed to teach professional teachers the fundamental principles and concepts of language structure used to teach reading. Participants will learn the sound-symbol correspondences of the English language (phonics) and understand how phonemic awareness and the phonological system of language are integral to the reading process. Paritcipants will learn how to apply knowledge of the English language to the teaching of reading and spelling.

Session II - RAVE-O: A Comprehensive Fluency-based Reading Intervention Program
Beth O'Brien, Ph.D., and Stephanie Gottwald, M.A.
Wednesday, August 6, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
Thursday and Friday, August 7 - 8, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

This two-and-a-half day course will prepare participants to implement RAVE-O, a curriculum for struggling readers in grades 1-4 using a systematic approach to reading fluency and comprehension.  RAVE-O combines our best knowledge about phonological processes, decoding principles and vocabulary development with new knowledge about lexical retrieval and automaticity for the sub-processes of reading.  Demonstration lessons will be used.
