The following scholarships are for College freshmen and can vary in student eligibility. They are based on the quality of a student’s artistic potential as demonstrated through a student’s portfolio of work. To be eligible for a scholarship, students must apply and be admitted to the College of Mount St. Joseph
National Scholastic Art Award
Amount Awarded: Full Tuition
Students apply through their art teacher during their senior year in high school. Students must have achievement of a certain level of national recognition in the competition and must also desire to pursue a degree in art.
Fine Arts Scholarship
Amount awarded: two at $2,000 and two at $1,500
Students should have an interest in hands-on experiences with many mediums such as drawing, painting, photography, ceramics, fabric design, printmaking, etc. These renewable scholarships are open to students who enroll and remain a major in one of the following: art, fine arts, art education, graphic design, and interior architecture & design.
Selections Scholarship
Amount Awarded: $2,000
This scholarship is awarded biennially. The next award is scheduled for fall 2011. These renewable scholarships are open to students who enroll and remain a major in one of the following: art, fine arts, art education, graphic design, and interior architecture & design.
Moore-Eckel Scholarship
Amount Awarded: $1,500
To receive this scholarship, students must be an incoming, first-time freshman attending full time, have a desire to attend or complete a college degree and also have a personal or professional academic record showing potential for success in college.
John Nartker Scholarship
Amount awarded: $1,000
To receive this scholarship students must be a high school senior with a minimum 3.0 high school GPA. Also you must have documentation of financial need – a completed FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) must be on file in the Mount’s Student Administrative Services Office. This renewable scholarship is open to students who enroll and remain a major in one of the following: art, fine arts, art education, graphic design, and interior architecture & design.
Students may also be eligible for merit and leadership scholarships.
High school seniors who apply and are accepted by the College, and who express an interest in the Art Department, are notified of the portfolio scholarship procedure in the February preceding their fall entry to the Mount.
How to Apply
High school seniors may apply for the College of Mount St. Joseph Art Scholarship Competition by submitting portfolios for review in April. Please submit a portfolio of representative work (from eight to a maximum of twelve) that exhibits 2-D and 3-D fine art and/or design abilities as well as reveals variety. The artworks should express individuality in content, style and technique.
· Include the following items in the portfolio:
o A short letter articulating your reasons for wanting to study art at the Mount and/or a brief essay on the importance of art in your life. Your letter should indicate which areas of study you are most interested in pursuing.
o A letter of recommendation from your high school art instructor.
o A transcript of grades.
o An inventory of the art pieces selected for the portfolio.
o Your name, address and school name (taped to outside of portfolio).
o If your work is away for Scholastic or other considerations, you may submit your work on slides or CD.
