Colin Smart, ‘13

Currently living in Antonio, Texas after receiving his bachelor’s in communication and new media studies, Colin Smart, 2013 Mount alumnus has applied the college’s communication discipline into the daily duties of his current job position in the AmeriCorps.

A Career in Service Work

Before graduating from the Mount, Smart applied and landed a position at City Year San Antonio, a nonprofit organization that works to solve the dropout crisis throughout the United States. The position is through AmeriCorps which is a corporation for national and community service.

With a passion for helping those in need, this job provided Smart with an opportunity to help children and to potentially change a persistent problem in the United States.  He is constantly utilizing his communication skills while communicating among his team members, students, and teachers to initiate changes one step at a time.

“I chose the Mount because it offered me the small classes and teacher support I thought was necessary for me to succeed,” says Smart. “The classes were always interesting and it benefitted me that I got a chance to know the teachers and other students who studied communication as well.”

Future Plans

Aside from his current endeavors to help people in need, Smart plans to volunteer at an animal shelter in the near future to help make a difference in the lives of animals.
