Jan Hirst, the cooperative education coordinator at the College of Mount St. Joseph, was named “Educator of the Year” by the Ohio Cooperative Education Association (OCEA). This is the highest honor for any individual through this organization.
As co-op coordinator, Hirst builds relationships among students, faculty and employers by working with all three groups to prepare students for co-op positions. She advises students on resume development, interview techniques and teaches a professional development course to prepare students for a co-op employment upon graduation. At the Mount, co-op experiences can help off-set expenses for students.
“It’s an honor to receive this award by colleagues in the OCEA organization,” Hirst said. “Seeing students grow professionally and personally as a result of their co-op participation is the co-op coordinator’s reward. We touch the future through our students.”
“Jan Hirst has dedicated herself to the Mount students for more than 30 years,” said Jen Franchak, director of the career & experiential education center at the Mount. “Cooperative education is strong in Ohio. To be recognized by the OCEA leadership and cooperative education peers is quite an accomplishment. This award shows Jan’s dedication to our students and business community is evident beyond our college campus.”
Hirst is retiring at the end of June after 32 years with the Mount. She graduated in 1971 from the Mount with a history degree. She lives in Delhi Township with her husband.
