Several Mount St. Joseph University students and staff are spending time during their Christmas break in New Orleans this year as part of a service project with the Mount's campus ministry.
The group is working with St. Bernard Project again this year. They are working on an "opportunity house," meaning the finished product will be purchased at an affordable price by a first-time home owner. They started the week finishing up the exterior painting (many of the group conquering their fear of heights in the process!) and are closing the week by working on installing interior doors and possibly baseboards.
The Mount's hosts at the House of Charity with Sister Monica, have given them a home away from home. "We are so fortunate to be able to stay here and work with such a great organization," said Michael Casciato, director of campus ministry at the Mount.
On Friday they ate breakfast at a local soup kitchen and had the opportunity to talk with some of the locals to not only hear about, but learn from, their experiences.
