Reports to: Director 

Purpose: The Academic Exploration Program Advisor is a team member in the Academic Advising Resource Center.  Primary responsibilities include coaching and academic advising for undeclared in major and load-restricted students; collaborating with faculty and related support services; and continual assessment and revision of retention efforts and programs to meet the needs of the students entering the University. Provide individualized coaching to first year students, connecting them with campus and its resources, and helping them reach their potential.

Duties:

• Provide primary academic advising for traditional and non-traditional students with the status of undeclared
• Provide primary academic advising and mentoring for traditional load-restricted students in collaboration with department advisors
• Introduce and assist students with diverse levels of academic preparation to higher education
• Assist each AEP and load-restricted student in making a realistic self-appraisal of academic potential in choosing an academic program of study
• Provide mentoring and monitor student athletes’ academic progress and assist with recommendations, referrals and resources
• Work with students from the point of registration to help welcome them and ease the transition to college
• Work with matriculated students to develop goals; monitor progress and help them reach their potential
• Communicate regularly with students via email, text, or other media
• Provide advising and coaching for PASS Program students (load-restricted), ensuring full participation in required elements of the program
• Monitor the academic progress of advisees
• Serve as a mentor and resource to advisees for the tools they need for a successful college career and foster individual potential
• Provide support services or appropriate referrals
• Follow-up with non-registered students after each registration period, in collaboration with dedicated department advisors
• Remain current and knowledgeable about all University curriculum, academic policies and procedures
• Collaborate with the Director of Career & Experiential Education to teach at least one section per academic year of CED 150 Career Exploration for Undeclared Students
• Engage students in activities related to service and potential majors and careers that allow for them to be in contact with faculty, staff, and alumni
• Collaborate with the Director of Academic Support for the provision of support services which develop and enhance student’s academic skills
• Participate in and support admission and student orientation activities
• Provide ongoing assessment and statistics related to undeclared and load-restricted students based on formal data collection and informal avenues of student input through a variety of interactions, and assist with research, projects, and reports as requested
• Stay current with most recent literature and studies related to academic exploration, advising, and the specific needs of undeclared students
• Participate in the following Academic Advising Resource Center team-based responsibilities:
• Provide information and assistance to students and Faculty
• Provide backup advising for all students
• Demonstrate knowledge and compliance with FERPA regulations.
• Participate in professional associations as appropriate
• Participate in University committee assignments
• Contributes to team effort by welcoming new and different work requirements; exploring new opportunities to enhance the services of the office; helping others accomplish related job tasks as needed

Supervision Exercised: None; may direct routine activities of others to help accomplish tasks.

Supervision Received: Works toward a previously defined objective with little supervision and uses a wide range of procedures; plans and arranges own work referring unusual cases to the Director of the Center for Student Success and Advising

Qualifications
Education: Master’s degree required; Higher Education, Counseling or similar discipline preferred.

Experience: Knowledge and work experience in academic advising and with the implementation of academic record policies and procedures; experience working with student athletes, first generation students, and/or students needing academic remediation; work experience in a customer service environment; experience with a computerized registration/course scheduling system and an academic records system, (CARS preferred); experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
