Hey everybody! Whew! Things are getting crazy here! I just had my first weekend that I really had homework from every class, and I think I came out on top… but I almost forgot to post a blog!
No worries! Here I am! : D
You know, there’s one thing that’s very, very important to me that I’ve never told you guys about: What it’s like to be an art student right here at the Mount! Now, I’m only a first year art student, so I’ve only taken basic classes so far, but these classes have already taught me so much about Art and Design that I didn’t know from high school.
Last semester I took Drawing I and Design Foundations Seminar. I learned SOOOOOOO much in just half a year! Drawing I will teach you to master the basics, how to draw forms, light and value. I went from drawing stick figures when I came in to actually drawing respectable still lifes when I left! My teacher, Alison Shepherd, at the end of the semester said that she could always recognize my work, because I had a peculiar type of shading that looks almost like handwriting! I thought that was pretty cool!
I take my Design classes with Professor Salchow. Professor Salchow also teaches first year students at DAAP at the University of Cincinnati, and she’s amazing! Professor Salchow really teaches her students to look at what you see in a different way. Design is about the ability to look at a picture or a work of art, and being able to recognize colors, shapes and patterns that work well with each other. But as Professor Salchow said, “Good art and design is not obvious.” So it’s hard to find things that that work together really well! A lot of times, things I tried didn’t work. But I can say for sure that after I took Design Foundations, I can really say that I can spot good design when I see it, and I can even make some!
At the art show that’s going up in the school gallery this week, you can come see the work of all of my teachers! Most probably, all my teachers will have work up in the gallery during the upcoming show. Professor Salchow will have up a large number of small collages made of objects she’s collected over time. You should come see it! Professor Salchow’s piece really shows how ordinary things can still have good design!
I hope many of you will make it to the art show over the next month! All the work is done by art faculty. I’ve seen a few of the pieces and they’re pretty cool! I hope to see some of you there.
